Tumescent Liposuction

One of the most important decisions you'll make when having liposuction is which procedure will be performed. Tumescent liposuction is the technique that uses the largest amount of wetting solution. The solution consists of saline (salt water), adrenaline and a local anesthetic (lidocaine). The solution causes your fat to become swollen and firm and thus easier to remove.

Before deciding to have Tumescent liposuction, consult a cosmetic surgeon or board-certified plastic surgeon; he or she will discuss your options and what’s best for your health. 

How Tumescent Liposuction is Performed

Your cosmetic surgeon or board-certified plastic surgeon will first mark the areas of your body where he or she will be working and then then inject your skin with the solution. Small incisions will be made on the marked areas, and a small tube called a cannula will be threaded into your skin. The cannula is attached to a sterile, vacuum-like device. Your surgeon will guide the cannula to your fatty areas and extract the unwanted tissue. You'll be asked to wear supportive garments for days or weeks after your procedure.

Advantages to Tumescent Liposuction

• Remain awake during the operation
• Less painful than traditional liposuction where general anesthesia is administered or IV sedation is used
• Minimal bleeding
• Small incisions require no stitches 

Disadvantages to Tumescent Liposuction

• Can accumulate too much fluid and experience lidocaine toxicity
• Possible skin depressions and irregularities
• Chance of bruising, tenderness and swelling
