Facial Liposuction Basics
It's an unfortunate fact of life that many of us lose weight and gain it back again over time. Worse yet, when we regain the weight, we get it back in areas that we didn’t realize we could. Mostly, we tend to pack on the extra pounds in areas like the neck, cheeks and forehead. And even when we do lose weight, those areas tend to be the last to go. Set up a consultation with a cosmetic surgeon or board-certified plastic surgeon to find out if facial liposuction can help you reshape these problem areas.
Some people are even born with a predisposition to facial fat. Some may have a round face with chubby cheeks, a bigger forehead or even extra fat in the jaw area. Having facial fat can make us appear older and feel more self-conscious. Facial liposuction is an alternative to a face-lift and is ideal for people who maintain a healthy lifestyle. Facial Liposuction Surgery
Facial liposuction surgery is usually done in a doctor’s office and is performed with a light sedation and local anesthesia, depending on what you and your surgeon feel is best for you. The most common liposuction surgery is the Tumescent technique. During this procedure, your doctor will make tiny incisions around your jaw or in between your gums. A solution is injected into your skin to make the fat swell, and a small tube called a cannula is moved back and forth to break up and vacuum out the fat.
Other liposuction techniques are performed in a similar fashion. The Ultrasonic Assisted technique (UAL) uses a special cannula that sends out energy from sound waves and melts the fat prior to the suctioning process. There's also the Super Wet technique, which is beneficial if you're undergoing more than one procedure. Becoming more popular in the United States is Water Assisted liposuction (WAL) in which the cannula delivers water to loosen up the fat prior to suctioning.
Facial liposuction recovery is relatively fast compared to other procedures. Your incisions are taped, and you're sent home wearing a compression garment. You may have some slight bruising along with swelling. Your doctor will also prescribe some medicine for pain. Most patients go back to work within a week.
