Arm Liposuction Guide

Arm Liposuction Basics

Have you ever waved hello to someone and noticed the skin flapping underneath your arms? You’re not alone. A lot of people have underarm flab, even when they’re not overweight. Some have genetically inherited that extra fatty tissue, and dieting and exercise won’t get rid of it. If you practice healthy eating habits and exercise regularly but still have excess fat under your arms, it’s time to speak with a cosmetic surgeon or board-certified plastic surgeon about liposuction for the arms.

You don’t have to feel self-conscious anymore. You can have beautiful, toned and slimmer arms in about an hour with arm liposuction. Your plastic surgeon will discuss the different liposuction techniques and options available to help you make an informed decision about arm liposuction. Arm Liposuction Surgery

In arm liposuction, your plastic surgeon will make small incisions near your elbow or in the crease of your armpit. He or she will then insert a small tube called a cannula that contains a solution made of saline, anesthetic and epinephrine. This solution encourages swelling of the fat, which makes it easier to break up and vacuum out. This procedure is called Tumescent liposuction, and it’s the most commonly used liposuction technique.

Other liposuction techniques are available, so you should speak with your plastic surgeon to discuss which is best for you. With the Water Assisted (WAL) technique, your surgeon uses the cannula to deliver a fan of spray to break up and loosen the fat prior to suctioning. Some surgeons feel this technique is very effective on resistant fat. Another popular technique is the Ultrasonic Assisted (UAL) in which the cannula delivers energy that melts the fat prior to suctioning. The Power Assisted (PAL) involves a mechanized cannula that rapidly vibrates to break up and vacuum out the fat.

After your surgery, your doctor will tape your incisions and you'll be sent home wearing a compression garment to aid the healing process. You'll be prescribed medicine for pain and will likely be back to your normal activities within a week.
