LocateADoc Q&A
What is your charity organization of choice and why?
GBAS = Give Back A Smile - the AACD's(American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry) charity organization. This is a very powerful program that restores the smiles of victims of domestic abuse. Please check it out givebackasmile.com
What is your favorite quote or saying?
"If you can't have fun, why play the game?" - When I'm teaching at the UNC School of Dentistry, I remind the students the importance of enjoying your work. After 23+ years of practicing dentistry and helping people with their health and their smile - I still find it to be fun, enjoyable, and challenging.
Finish this sentence: If I weren't a doctor I would be___.
- an ARTIST. Being an ARTIST was something I wanted to be when I was growing up. My father told I should consider a "regular" job. With dentistry, I get the best of both worlds - "a regular job" and the ability to use my "ARTISTIC" skills and talents to help people with their smile and their health.
What is your favorite procedure to perform and why?
Bonding - I paid my way through dental school doing research primarily with composite resin (bonding materials). These tooth colored filling materials allow me to restore a smile, often with little or no drilling - that means you as a patient get to keep more of your tooth and have the filling look like part of your smile. Bonding allows me to use my artistic skills as well as my dental skills to take on the challenges of a broken smile.
What procedure would you like to do more of and why?
Invialign - I already have more Invisalign experience than any other dentist in the area. But the reason I like Invisalign so much is because it allows me to orthodontically correct smiles without all of the wires and brace. At the same time, I am improving gum health and smiles while limiting drilling and providing more conservative treatment.
In a perfect world, when would you like to retire, where would you go and what would you do?
Probably never. I get great pleasure out of helping people with their health and their smile. When it is time to cut back, I'll probably reduce the number of hours I spend at my office and spend more time teaching and maybe working with special needs cases. I do enjoy travel and would welcome the opportunity to see more of the world.
