Smile Makeover
A "smile makeover" is the term used to describe when someone has one or more cosmetic dental procedures to improve their smile through dental bonding, veneers, tooth implants, whitening or braces. A smile makeover is different from a full mouth reconstruction because it’s done electively. If you feel self-conscious about your smile, talk to a cosmetic dentist in your area about the benefits of a smile makeover.
When planning to perform a smile makeover, your dentist will take your whole appearance into consideration — hair color, skin tone, gum tissue, lip size and shape, and the color, width, length and shape of your teeth — to help establish your ideal smile. Having a smile makeover can drastically change your appearance and help enhance your smile.
Smile Makeover Overview
Before your smile makeover, your dentist will perform an exam to make sure your overall oral health is good. He or she will evaluate your teeth, gums, underlying support structure and bite (occlusion) to make sure you’re a good candidate for the recommended dental procedures. If your examination reveals a problem, such as gum disease or a misaligned bite, your dentist will recommend you undergo those corrections first.
The cost of a smile makeover can vary greatly, from as little as $500 to more than $10,000, depending on what procedures are performed and the type of dental insurance you have. Read more about the cost of resorative dentistry and the different financing options available.
Some dentists choose to correct crooked teeth with veneers. Veneers are thin shells of porcelain or composite resin that are bonded to the front of your teeth. They're used for chipped, worn, uneven or abnormally spaced teeth. Braces are also used to straighten teeth, and a variety of different types are available: Invisalign, clear or the conventional type.
Large gaps in the teeth can be corrected with dental implants, a dental bridge or dentures. Cracked or chipped teeth can be repaired with dental bonding, porcelain veneers or crowns. If your teeth are stained or discolored, your dentist may perform tooth whitening. If you have extended gums, they can be remedied with surgical or laser gum contouring. Fillers such as Botox can be used to improve deep smile lines.
After your smile makeover, your dentist will provide instructions regarding after-care and maintenance. Good oral hygiene habits will help maintain your bright new smile for years to come. Make sure you're using the correct toothpaste. Non-abrasive toothpastes are recommended for cosmetic restorations because they won’t scratch the surface of your reconstructed tooth. Regular flossing is recommended, and certain foods and drinks should be avoided so you won’t stain or chip your teeth.
