This patient wanted and improvement in her smile lines (nasolabial folds) as well as a conservative lip augmentation. Since her smile lines were not very deep, she would not use up all of the 1.0 cc Restylane, and she would have enough for a conservative lip augmentation with her smile line improvement. This set of After photos were taken immediately after the Restylane was injected before any significant swelling set in. The benefit of these types of injectable fillers is that you get a WYSIWYG (What You See is What You Get) result. There is no need to overfill, as would be needed in Fat transfer, or need to wait for several weeks to months to see the result that is desired. _____________________________________________________________________ NOTE: There is a risk of injecting Restylane or any filler into a blood vessel. Since the lips are very vascular (full of blood vessels), your surgeon should be wary of this complication. If it is noticed immediately, which your surgeon should be able to recognize, an immediate massage of the lip where the injection occured should be performed. The injection into the blood vessel will cause an area of the lip and possibly skin to become white, which occurs due to the blood vessel being clogged with the injection material. Massaging the pale/white area, can bring blood flow back into the area, so that skin necrosis (dying skin) does not occur. If this does occur, the skin that was compromised by the injection may turn black or begin to turn into a scab, which will result in an areas of scarring. Although this is a rare risk, it does and can happen. Be sure that your Restylane injector is aware of this risk. They can minimize this risk by pulling back on the syringe slightly, to be sure they are not inside a vessel, before each injection. It takes longer, but it is a safer technique.
This patient was bothered by a few small wrinkles on her upper and lower lips and also desired a slight lip augmentation. These lines are barely noticable to the casual observer, and I explained that to her. However, she was bothered by these lines when she looked in the mirror. We used the 0.4 cc Restylane, which is an adequate amount for her desires. The 0.4 cc is less expensive than the 1.0 cc Restylane, which makes it more cost effective for her to continue to do this periodically. _____________________________________________________________________ NOTE: There is a risk of injecting Restylane or any filler into a blood vessel.
Restylane is a good solution for temporary improvement of fine lines of the upper and lower lips. Patient shown here had injection into a deep line on the left side of her upper lip.
