Question: i am 16. i am not sexually active, and i have bumps of irregular shape on my inner labia (the inside flaps). they also are a dark colour and they extend to about 2 cm below the outer flaps. although the bumps are very small (largest 1mm square), they do concern me. also, is labia reduction a recomended procedure? thanks jen.
Answer:Labia reduction is usually a bad idea except in extreme cases. If this is a concern t you, go see a gynecologist and be frank in terms of your concerns. They should be able to reassure that you are normal.

Question: i am a 17 year old female virgin.BUt i masturbate by using the handrests of a chair. My right labia minora is pink and small but the left labia minora has enlarged and is discolured. It sometimes flops out in between the 2 lips of the vagina. Is this a problem..plz help as i am worried
Answer:It is not possible to diagnose this condition without an examination. See you gynecologist for an exam. Be honest and forthcoming with your doctor.

Question: Hi, I'm a 14 year old female with no serious diseases or health issues. But there is one thing that I'm concerned about. My one inner labia (I believe it's called) is a lot larger the the other. It extends past my outter labia, and i was just wondering if this was something to be concerned about, or if there was something that I could do about it, considering that it makes me self conscience. Thank you.
Answer:It is nothing to worry about. When you have your first gynecologic exam, ask your Dr about it. THere is a wide range in labial size. Plastic surgery could be used to correct this problem if it really is a problem.

Question: I have kind of an embarrasing question. I seem to be having cronic "cysts" or "pimples" on my labia. They come and go. I have been to 2 different doctors...they just shrug it off and say it is probably clogged sweat glands. They are raised and red. They eventually pop like a pimple..either with pus or pus and blood. I am prone to cystic acne..and this is what it reminds me of...is it possible to get cystic acne on my labia??? I also just had a huge cyst aspirated on my ovary and it is back again. I also have cystic breasts....are some people just prone to cysts???? Any info would be appreciated. Is there anything I can do to keep from getting these...they are VERY embarrasing. Thanks.
Answer:I would see a dermatologist. It probably IS clogged sweat glands but they should be able to give you antibiotics and care intructions to make them go away.

Question: Do you have any idea how much that type of plastic surgery would cost? It's only on one of the inner labia. Thanks.
Answer:I do not know, sorry.

Question: I am scared and very concern. I have a 14 year old daughter that has a problem with her menstruation. She started menstruating in may of 99, she had it for two months and then stopped for six months later she got it again then stop again for six months. I took her to our regular doctor and refered us to a women doctor ob/gyn. We went to the ob/gyn and examing her. The doctor told me that she does not have a clitoris and labia minora. She ask me if my pedritician said somthing about it. I told her that her private parts were normal when a baby. The doctor order some blood test and I will get the results in 2 weeks. Also order a ultrasound for the pelvic/abdominal area. I am very concern and in shock. I would like to know what are the chances or causes for not developing a labia minora and clitoris. It was very painful to hear it and see it for myself. Please let me know as soon as you can. Thank you.
Answer:It sounds as if the appropriate work-up is under way. You daughter should have tests to check her chromosomes, levels of reproducitve hormones and a test to rule congenital adrenal hyperplasia (depending on the physical findings). An ultrasound to check her internal reproductive organs and kidneys is also a good idea. Examination by a specialist in pediatric gynecoology should be arranged if the diagnosis is not clear after these results are available. Pediatric gynecologists are usually only found at academic centers. Contact either acog.org or asrm.org if you need help in finding a pediatric gynecologist. Good luck.

Question: what do gynecologists do during an exam?
Answer:They will examine your breasts, heart, lungs. They will then perform a pelvic exam. This consists of examining the external genitalia (labia etc.) and then a speculum will be placed into the vagina to visualize the vagina and cervix A speculum is a metal device to separate the wall of the vagina. A Pap smear will be obtained. The speculum will be removed. The examiner will then insert one or two fingers into the vagina while placing the other hand on your abdomen. This is called a bimanual exam and is done to feel the contour of the uterus and the size of the ovaries. Good luck.

Question: My wife and I have been married for about three weeks. We were both virgins before we were married and are both fairly clueless about the whole sexual thing. Every time we have intercourse, it's great. The problem is that afterwards my wife (a very petite Asian girl) has a lot of pain. I know about the Hymen, but shouldn't that have ripped far enough to not be painful by now? If we don't have intercourse for a few days, it heals up and we can do it again, only to hurt her further and put off sex for another few days. I try to be as gentle as possible and my penis is not exceptionally big, but I end up hurting her every time. We had sex yesterday and even though she was hurting, we tried again this morning. She put the head of my penis between her labia and started to push it in, but couldn't even get the head in before it was too painful for her. What can I (or she) do?!
Answer:There arre dilators available that will allow the gradual stretching of the vagina. Ask her gynecologist about these devices and where to obtain them in your area

Question: I have some questions that I would really appreciate a response to. First, I had breast implants done approximately 16 years ago (silicon) I was 25 years old at the time. I now am faced with "capsular contraction" (I believe that is what it is called, hardening and discomfort of the breasts). I would like to know what the success rate is for successfully replacing the implants and not having the problem reoccur. Is it possible to have the upper and lower eye lids lifted at the same time as this replacement surgery? Also, one question that I am very embarrassed about since I have never heard of this problem before, is there any surgery that would alter the appearance of "extremely" long vaginal lips, I take the word "extremely" from an obstetrition who must have felt that since I was in labor that I would not be sensitive to his remark "she has extremely large vaginal lips". Please answer this question, it has made me very self concious even though my husband says its great!
Answer:Dear Donna, The capsular contracture is a difficult problem and recurrence is common (at least 50% from published studies. It is reduced by the use of textured implants and also by placing the implants under the muscle (a less natural position but one which better "hides" the implant. Eyelid surgery can very safely be performed at the time of explantation, removal of the capsules and replacement surgery. The vaginal lips question is very common. Often women are uneven on the two sides and require evening of the lips. The labia minora (proper term) reduction is commonly performed in my practice (about once or twice per month) with excellent results. Make certain that they are not over reduced, your husband won't appreciate it.

Question: i have sypmtons of an itchy vagina with little sores/bumps,they r on the labia part not on the inside.. they come and go...please tell me what this could be?
Answer:Sorry, I'm not a GYN but...here's what medline says... " Persistent itching of the vagina and frequently the surrounding area (vulva). Considerations Many of the conditions that cause vaginal itching are related to irritation of the skin. Avoid the use of synthetic fabrics, perfumes, or other known irritants in the vaginal area. Common causes a chemical irritant or medication (including detergents and fabric softeners, chemical sprays, ointments, creams, douches, and contraceptive foams) vaginal infection in conjunction with antibiotic use monilial vaginitis (vaginal yeast infection) vaginal discharge caused by other infections such as trichomonas vaginitis and hemophilus vaginalis menopause (in women older than age 35 (typically)), as a result of decreasing levels of estrogen pruritus vulvae (a noncontagious condition) vulvovaginitis before puberty (children only) pinworms lichen sclerosis certain skin conditions of the vulvar skin (may be precancerous) Home care To help prevent and treat vaginal yeast infection: keep the genital area clean and dry. Use plain unscented soap. take showers rather than tub baths. wear cotton panties or pantyhose with a cotton crotch. Avoid panties made from synthetic materials. For infants and toddlers, change diapers often. change out of wet clothing, especially wet bathing suits or exercise clothing, as soon as possible after completion of the activity. avoid douches--they may make the itching worse. ask your health care provider about eating yogurt, sour cream, and buttermilk, or taking acidophilus tablets when taking antibiotics. after urination or bowel movements, cleanse by wiping or washing from front to back (vagina to anus). if obese, lose weight. avoid broad-spectrum antibiotics unless absolutely necessary. Avoid scratching; this will only aggravate the problem. Avoid overexertion, heat, and excessive sweating. Keep the genital area clean and dry. Sexual activity might need to be delayed until symptoms cease. It may be helpful to use a lubricant, such as K-Y Lubricating Jelly, during intercourse. Low-potency, nonprescription steroid creams or ointments (corticosteroids) may be effective in treating symptoms. For vaginal itching associated with diabetes mellitus, follow prescribed therapy for treating the underlying disease (mycotic vulvar infection). Adhere strictly to your prescribed treatment program. For vaginal itching caused by vulvovaginitis before puberty, follow recommendations above for prevention of vaginal yeast infection. In addition, avoid using colored or perfumed toilet tissue, scented soap, and bubble bath. If antibiotics are prescribed for any reason, yogurt may help reduce the risk of developing vaginal itching by preventing vaginal yeast infections. Teach children to resist and report any attempted sexual contact by another person. Don’t try to remove any foreign object from a child’s vagina. Take the child to the health care provider for removal. Call your health care provider if symptoms worsen or persist longer than 1 week. there is unusual vaginal bleeding or swelling" Hope this helps... Julie Adinolfe RN AskANurse
