Question:
In order for Breast surgery(Breast reduction) to be covered by insurance, what sort of health problems would a person go through? I suffer from rashes under my breast, Sore shoulders, back and neck pain. I am a size 42DDD. please reply .Thank you
Answer:
Dear Kimberley, That varies with the insurance company and your individual policy. Many policies have a minimum amount of tissue that must be removed in order to provide coverage. Your local plastic surgeon would be able to contact your insurance company in order to see about coverage.

Question:
I am 25yrs old I gave birth to my only child in 1995, Me and my husband have not used protection for the past 6yrs and have not been able to become pregnant. I have seen a dr. who says My fallopian tubes have scar tissue in them. My question is how and why does this decrease my chances of becoming pregnant and how can we overcome this?
Answer:
Dear Virginia You need to address these questions with your doc since he/she is the one familiar with your case. But a prior infection can cause this, and your treatment may be surgery or more likely in vitro (test tube baby). Good luck Fady I. Sharara, M.D VCRM

Question:
I have had very heavy bleeding with clots every month for some time now. I have also had an extreme bloated feeling (like something is pushing from the inside out)all of the time. The bloating is obvious because it looks like I am about 6 months pregnant(I am not) I am expereiencing low back pain. The pain is much more severe in the morning before I urinate. My husband says that he feels like he is "hitting" something when we have intercourse. I have had two miscarriages in the past five years, I know that something is wrong with me. The doctor that I have been seeing is very old,I have made an appointment with another, but I cannot get in for another month. Can you tell me what this might sound like so that I can do some research?
Answer:
Sounds like fibroids to me. Have an exam right away. They are benign but surgery is often needed to fix this problem.

Question:
I am 19 years old and I have been thinking about having a breast reduction because I've been having back problems. I wore a C cup starting at the age of 11 and through junior high school, then all during high school I wore a DD cup and my weight was 170. Now my weight is 190 and my cup size now is DDD and I've been this size for two years. My question is do you think I could be a canidate for a breast reduction? My OB said that I was too young and that My breast aren't that large for me to have serious back problems.
Answer:
Dear Amanda, Your OB is wrong. I would suggest that you visit with a qualified plastic surgeon in your area to discuss breast reduction surgery. You sound like a perfect candidate for this excellent procedure.

Question:
I have never worn glasses in my life but I went to the eye doctor for the first time this year (I am 18 years old), they told me I have a weak eye and that it can't be corrected. I want to be a police officer or a military police officer and I was wondering if laser eye surgery can correct my weak eye. The eye doctor that I went to see told me that I would not pass the vision requirements to become a police officer. This ruined all my future life plans and I wanted to know if there is anything to help my weak eye so I can pass the vision requirements. How much would something like it cost also? Thank-you!!
Answer:
What you are describing is amblyopia or lazy eye that you developed as a child for various reasons. This if not caught early during your development may lead to visual loss in the affected eye. This is not correctable after about the age of 10 usually. Eye patching and glasses can be used before this time to prevent this from worening and to rehabilitate the eye. This is why early chilhood screening is so important to help prevent this type of visual loss.

Question:
My husband and I are trying to concieve a baby. We have been trying for the last 5yrs. and we have not been successful.I've had my tubes checked and i did have a blockage which was fixed at the time of the surgery. I also had a Laparascopy(I'm not quite sure how to spell it)to check all my female organs. The doctor says everything was fine.We would like to know what else can we do?We can not afford anything else.I have insurance that will cover some but not all the procedures.
Answer:
Dear Sharon You need to have invitro (IVF)since the surgery did not help. The only good program I know of is in Charleston (Southeastern Fertility). Good luck Fady I. Sharara, M.D VCRM

Question:
For the past month and a half I have not gotten my mense. I did have an etopic pregnacy which resulted in surgery in which I lost my tube and the baby. I am very worried about having one again sinse I nearly lost my life. My obgyn told me that it must be my weight because i have now gained at least over 50 pounds. I have been exercising alot in the past few weeks and did lose 11 pounds. My question is should I listen to my Docor and risk my life or should I demand an ultrasound. She did take a blood test which came out negative and I also took 3 at home pregnancy test which also came out negative. Please answer me as quickly as you can for I might not have much time. I will leave my cycle date of my last cycle as july 14-july 18. Thank you.
Answer:
Your weight has nothing to do with why you had an ectopic. Most of these cases are due to a prior infection that may have damaged your tubes. However, your weight may be a factor why you have not had a period, but you need to have your thyroid tested. It is not unusual not to have a period for about 6 weeks after the surgery, but you need to have something called Provera to get a period if u do not get one on your own soon. Pls discuss all these issues with your doc. Good luck Fady I. Sharara, M.D VCRM

Question:
I was wondering, how to get rid of my double chin? How long do they put you out for surgery? What are the risks? And how much does it cost? How long does it last. Can you exercise your chin and get the same results?
Answer:
Dear Susan, The treatment depends upon what the problem is and the condition of your skin. If there is a lot of skin excess, a neck lift is necessary which is an operation which takes at least 3 hours and for which the recouperation is about two weeks. If liposuction is required, the operation may just take an hour and the recovery period is much less. Sometimes, an abbreviated combination of both procedures can be the best choice. Exercise will not help.

Question:
HI, i have very small breasts and after having my son they have shrunk even more i am only 18 and wondering if there are any plastic surgeons willing to do surgery on someone my age. the only good thing is that i never plan on having any more children. also i was wondering if you have to pay in full or if there are payment options available?
Answer:
Dear Jami, Certainly many surgeons would operate on you and payment plans could likely be arranged - especially if you already have children and are essentially living as an adult.

Question:
I am scheduled for a breast augmentation surgery in one week. My surgeon has given me several choices of incision sites--Under the breast, axilla, nipple, or unbilical region. I am very familiar with the under the breast approach, but not so familiar with the navel/umbilical approach. The staff at the surgeon's office really are pushing for the umbilical approach where there will be no scarring in the breast area, but I am hesistant as I know very little about this procedure. Are you familiar with this approach? Do you think that this procedure is easier to rehab from? Do you think that the implants will be put in with the accuracy as they can be with the slit under the breast?
Answer:
Dear Christy, Not only is it more difficult to make an even pocket for the implant but, the implant manufacturers (last time I checked) will not cover the implants for problems such as leakage if they are placed through the umbilical approach. Most of us prefer a site on or near the breast.

Question:
I was interested in having Breast lift surgery.I do not wish to be "knocked-out" could that still be done and what is the recovery time?
Answer:
Dear Tersesa, There is very littly difference, these days between general anesthetic and intravenous sedation other than control of the airway (meaning these days that mask is used inside the mouth in order to safely deliver your body oxygen). You usually still breathe on your own even with general anesthetic. I would suggest that you leave the decision to a competent anesthesiologist who is providing your care. Most of our patients have found very little difference between simply not remembering the surgery and being "knocked out".

Question:
I am a 46 year old female. Is there anything that can be done to clear up prominent, red veins on the white part of my eyes? The veins run from my pupil to the corner of each eye. They are very unattractive and make me look tired or on drugs! I have had this problem for many years. I also have dry eyes and wore hard contact lenses for about 15 years. Six years ago, I had RK surgery to correct my near-sightedness. Any information would be helpful. Thanks!
Answer:
These veins may be do to a lesion on your eye called a pterygium or pinguecula. You need to have them evaluated by an ophthalmologist to see what can be done. Sometimes over the counter decongestant containing eye drops (vasocon) call help the redness for short periods of time.
