REF: Excimer Laser
What experience should an ophtalmology have with this procedure regarding the number of surgeries done? What price am I looking for both eyes?
What are the positives ? What are the negatives of this procedure. No other disease process is involved.
Answer:
Dear Bill,
You should find an ophthalmologist that has formal corneal and refractive fellowship training and is board certified. He should be involved in your care from your initial evaluation for surgery, and your post-operative care along with the actual surgery. He should have certification and experience with the lasers that he is using. High volume does not mean high quality! Price should not be your concern, because this is a once in a lifetime procedure and you only want the best for you. In general it is about $2000 an eye by a good surgeon. If you are a good candidate there are a lot of positives for having the surgery including reducing your dependence on glasses and contact lenses. As far as the negatives - there are many that you need to be aware of if you are not a good candidate and a good surgeon and his/her staff will usually educate you about these at your initial evaluation, which is usually complimentary. Your eyes should be healthy without other diseases like dry eyes, infections, cataracts, glaucoma, retina problems, etc.

Hello,
I had LASIK performed on my right eye in Nov. 1998, with an enhancement done in June 1999. I posted a question to this website 11/99 regarding the dry eye that followed the surgery, and was advised to try TheraTears four times a day.
I tried the TheraTears (in the single use container) several times a day during the day, and found that I got more relief in the morning if I used an eye ointment (Refresh PM or Lacrilube) before bedtime. TheraTears has been highly recommended, but it has not done much to improve the condition of my cornea. At my last checkup (5/01), the cornea still picks up dye and is still missing some cells.
I have found that decreasing my intake of caffeine has made a big difference in the dryness, but I still find that the eye is dry. I am also have IDDM, and have improved control of my blood sugar in the past two years.
Is there anything else that I can try to combat this chronic dry eye? Since the surgery, I have had regular checkups every 6 months, and I have a punctal plug in both upper and lower lids.
Answer:
Dear Lisa,
There are many treatments for dry eyes
besides artificial tears and punctal
occlusion. It really would not be
appropriate to discuss to this in a
forum such as this. You require a
formal evaluation by a corneal and
external disease specialist. Dr. Geoff
Tabin is nearby at the Univ. of Vermont
in Burlington. You may want to make an
appointment to see him for a better
evaluation of your specific problem.

I am 22 and I have extremely small breast
I wear a 32 size bra but my cup size is smaller than an A. But training bras are to small around. I am the same size I was when I was 12. I have tried herbal forms but none have worked. I have also tried herbal estrogen and that also has not worked. I can't afford implants. I would like to know if there is anything I can take or do. I also would like to gain a few pounds but that also hasn't worked.
Answer 1:
There is no known way to increase breast size other than surgery. Unfortunately, if getting breast enlargement is what you want, you may have to save up money and have the procedure done when you can afford it.
Answer 2:
Dear Faye,
There is no way other than breast augmentation surgery that is proven. There is a new suction device which may stimulate blood flow and marginally increse your bust size but my understanding is that this works best to make large breasts even larger. I wish that there was an easier way but, for now, implant surgery is the only sure way of increasing your bust size.
Question:
Will i be able get surgery to remove the inner thigh skin that has darkend from being overweight (friction) now that i have lost weight?
Answer:
Dear Jayshree,
That depends upon the amount of skin involved and its quality. If just color needs to be removed, this can be done with a laser specific for removing color from the skin. If there is a large amount of excess skin, an inner thigh lift can be performed where the involved skin is actually removed. I would suggest that you consult with a cosmetic plastic surgeon in your area to determine which procedure is best for you.
Question:
I am interested in researching the credentials and practice history of the surgeon I am considering to perform my Lasik Procedure. Please let me know of web sites and other resources available to research his credentials.
Answer:
Dear Pat,
The following are good places to look:
www.ascrs.org
www.isrs.org
www.aao.org
www.locateadoc.com
Also check with your state medical board
to see if there are any significant
actions against them. Also, see if
other people have had surgery and are
happy with the results. What better way
to find a surgeon than that?

Are there teaching facilities that offer reduced cost plastic surgery?
Answer:
Dear Allison,
Yes there are. There is a well known one in NY and also one in Dallas Texas. In these facilities, residents who have a great deal of surgical experience are training to perform cosmetic procedures. They are overseen to some extent by staff depending upon their experience and facility at performing a given procedure.
Question:
what is the percentage of patients that have 20-20 vison or better after surgery 20-30, 20-40? How many surgery's do you perform per wk.? what days? Thanks, Tony

Dear Tony,
Thanks for the question. I think that
you like to see my award winning website

David Cano,
I AM 41YEARS OLD AND PREPARING FOR LASIX SURGERY. I DEVELOPED KELOIDS ON MY EARS DURING MY TEEN YEARS AFTER PIERCING. SINCE I HAVE REPEIRCED MY EARS AND HAD NO PROBLEMS. I ALSO HAVE A KELOID ON ONE BREAST FROM SURGERY 20 years ago BUT NO scarring ON THE OTHER BREAST after having the same urgery 10 years later. ARE KELOIDS A RISK WITH LASIK?
Answer:
Dear Patricia,
More and more report now seem to show
that keloids are less important in LASIK
surgery than originally thought. They
were thought to play a larger role in
scar formation in earlier PRK excimer
surgery. I think with your decreased
formation of keloids in the recent past
that you are safer to have the sugery
done at this point.

I am wondering if there are any surgeons out the that would perform surgery to remove breast implants that have caused great medical conditions, to the point of my going on Social Security Disability. I would sell my soul the have them removed but am unable to pay for the procedure. So, I am looking for a surgeon that would consider doing this as an act of humanity for a desperate woman?
Does anyone out there know of such a person/surgeon/doctor?
This is a critical situation. Can someone help me?
Answer:
Dear Shauna,
Many of us do and perform charity cases on a regular basis. Since your decision to have breast implants in the first place was a cosmetic decision very few if any would remove them free of charge - especially since there has been no study to show a relationship between breast implants and disease. I would suggest that you visit with the surgeon that placed them and see if he/she would do the procedure for a minimal fee.
Question:
I need surgery on my Penis to straighten it out and how much will it cost
Answer:
Dear Charles,
Penile straightening is performed by urologists and urologic plastic surgeons. What is done is essentially removal of the scar that is causing the crooked posture followed by allowing it to heal with minimal repeat scarring. The cost will be determined by your surgeon based on the extent of the procedure.
Question:
I've lost over 100 lbs. and have the problems of sagging skin. The area I am most concerned in is my upper arms and the "batwings" that I desperately want to have removed. I had consulted with a plastic surgeon a few years ago, and at the time, that procedure (I believe called an arm lift) cost $3,600. Could you give me a rough estimate of the cost of that surgery now?
Answer:
Dear Donna,
Not much has changed with that particular procedure. The biggest downfall is the scar along the length of the inner upper arm. The price, also has changed little. I charge $4000 for the procedure inclusive of anesthesia charges and all pre and postoperative visits.
