My Husband and I have been trying to conceive for 6 years now with no success. He just recently had surgery to fix a inguenial hernia and we were told that could be the problem but we are not certain that it is the problem can you tell me for sure if him having the hernia would have been the problem and if so can you tell me how long after he had the surgery does it take for the sperm to be at the level it needs to be for conception. I also would like to know if it is possible for a women to have a period and not be ovualting and not be producing any eggs. You see I know nothing about my body so I don't know if it is possible.

My mother has been suffering from TMJ for years now and has become addicted to the pain medications prescribed to her. She has seen every doctor in our city and no one can seem to help her, just keep suggesting odd treatments and prescribing more pain killers. After about 8 years of this, she just now got a splint. She has only had it for a couple of weeks, but the doctors tell her it could take her many more years before she feels any kind of relief. She is already suffering from depression and has built up such a tolerance to the pain meds that she runs out of her prescription two weeks before it is time to refill and is in pain half of the month, essentially more than half of her day to day life. She is only 43 and spends most of her life in bed. I am convinced that she is a perfect candidate for surgery, but I need a professional opinion with help in weighing the pros and cons (at this point, anything EFFECTIVE is an option) and possibly help in finding a good surgeon in our area. She needs her life back, please help me!

Hello! My name is Keri Rex. For the past year and a half, I haved live with a deep pain in my lower left abdomen. The pain gets much worse while my newlywed husband and I try to have sexual intercourse. I have been to many doctors and am all cried out with little hope!! My son is 4y/o. For the past year, I've noticed his eyes turning out and up when he is daydreaming. First it was just the left eye, but now I notice that his right eye does the same thing. I have been told by an eye Dr. that since it happens for a brief 10sec or so, and that he can correct it himself that he will just watch him. In doing some reading about eye anomilies, it refers to this condition and says that if it isn't corrected by glasses, excercises or surgery that the vision my be eventually impaired. Is this physician misleading me,or just conservative, or an idiot? I don't want to sit back when I can correct this problem now. My daughter calls him Lizard eyes, so I know that I'm not the only one who sees his eyes drift apart.

Does LASIK eye surgery put your eyes at 20/20 or does it just get them close to 20/20, or is it diffrent in every patient. Dear Russ, LASIK is done with an excimer laser, so it is a form of laser eye surgery, and often referred to as "Laser Vision Correction". Laser eye surgery is not always LASIK however. There are several types of lasers and many other kinds of laser eye surgery used for different treatments. Depending on your age, health and acuity prior to LASIK there is a good chance that you will achieve 20/20, but this is a surgery, every patient responds somewhat differently, and there are no guarantees. It is wise to view LASIK as a way to become less dependent on lenses, knowing there is a small chance you may still need them for some activities. Realistic expectations make for happy outcomes. A healthy diet is good for your eyes, as well as the rest of your body, and being active improves circulation...always good for the body. But there is no magic pill, herb, or vitamin that will impart good vision. In our clinic most patients see very well by the day after LASIK, though complete healing will take several weeks. Dear Dr. I am an interventional cardiologist. I have had clicking (poping) of both my TMJs since about 10 yrs without any pains. Since about 2 weeks, my right TMJ is starting to be painful while eating, specially solid foods and on clinching my teeth a little bit hard. It is also stiil clicking with the left TMJ but the left side is not causing any pain till now. I would like to inform u that most of my body joints clicks as well since very long time (my knees,elbows,ankles and even the sternoclavicular joint) but none of them is painul and I dont have any collagen disease. I thought that it is some sort of joint derrangement and I have started NSAId and muscle relaxants. I would be very grateful if u can tell me whether this is correct or not, what exactly Should I do (investigations and ttt) and for how long. I am very grateful for ur time and advise. NSAIDS and muscle relaxants are a good start. It certainly sounds like joint derangement so it needs rest. Add a soft, nonchewing diet to what you are currently doing now for 2 weeks and see if you get any relief. Often the disk/condyle relationship changes leading to pain. If left untreated, DJD will ensue just like any other joint. Surgery is a last resort. Often an appliance can help alleviate symptoms and I would recommend an NTI appliance. This helps reduce joint stress by removing the reflex contracture of the temporalis muscle that pulls against the lateral pterygoid (part of which attaches to the disk). I also recommend 600mg advil q4-6 regardless if pain is present while you try the nonchewing diet. This device will also help with headaches. Good luck. Dear Martha, This is a procedure where a vaginal flap is raised so as to recreate the hymen. This can be repeated up to three or more times depending upon anatomy. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia but recovery is very rapid. The cost varies across the country but is about $5000 to $10,000.

LASIK laser vision correction is the best choice for nearly all myopes seeking surgical correction. The cost of surgery is rising because there is less competition. Over the past year many clinics that were performing LASIK have quit doing the procedure, or gone out of business entirely. The price in the Pacific Northwest has been lower than the rest of the country from the beginning, but the influx of discounters had depressed pricing further. Now they are gone, and the price is drifting back up toward a more realistic range...remember, the doctor needs to make a little profit to stay in business! LASIK is laser vision correction. This is only one of many types of Laser eye surgery though, a variety of lasers are used to treat many different eye conditions and diseases. When LASIK is done correctly, problems are rare, but it is surgery, and has inherent risks just like any surgery. LASIK has been performed in South America since 1987, and the results appear to be very stable. We are not psychics and can't say what will happen in 20 or 30 years, but eye doctors are confident enough in the safety of LASIK that many have had the procedure themselves. Night glare is normal during the healing process. In a small number of patients it can become a long term problem. If you have glare with contacts, you probably will with LASIK. There is no reason you could not wear contact lenses after LASIK, though in this practice it is very rare for a patient to want or need to, our results are outstanding.

My mom is 67 years old (a young one) she needs a hip replacement(now has a walker) 100 lbs overweight,can't exercise, they won't do a weight loss surgery, tried it all as far as diets. Doc says she is in a catch 22. She also has copd(lungs) any suggestions to help?

Dear Misti, In this situation I would recommend a combination of two things. First of all, in place of a diet, I urge you to go to dietplate.com and sign on for a series of menues using real food and recipes which include a grocery list to help give your mother a healthy routine without deprivation or restriction. Secondly, there are books available that outline exercise for people who are handicapped in any way or unable to do regualr aerobics. These start with upper body workouts that will burn calories and facilitate her weight loss efforts and increase her energy and mobility. I have used these often with my clients. If she is unwilling to take these steps, a visit with a couselor to help motivate her may be another option. Don't give up. Small steps can really add up!!!

Is there a site available that details the possible side effects of having surgery to correct my farsightedness? I have heard of becoming light sensitive and having "dry eyes". Your newsletter today spoke of floaters and a continued decline in vision. Does the last mean that eye sight continues to deterate even after having the surgery? Also - I am 50 and now need bifocals - is there anything available to correct that at the same time? Or would I continue to need glasses for close up work? Thank you.

Any potential complications for farsighted are the same as for nearsighted patients. As for needing reading glasses, you would still likely need glasses for near work.

Question:

Is there a cause for "popping joints"? I have had knee surgery and have TMJ and all joints pop quite frequently, should this be a cause of alarm or not?

Answer:

The noise a joint makes when it opens up a bit farther than normal is called "cavitation" there are a number of theories as to the cause of the noise. As long as the joints are making the noise by themselves and not as a result of you doing anything other than a gentle stretch, there shouldn't be any cause for concern. I've heard of TMJ "clicking" but not popping, I'll assume this is the noise you are describing. This clicking may be causes by improper joint motion of the joint.....I'd check with a chiropractor listed at www.activator.com for someone who is advanced proficiency rated, or a dentist that specializes in TMJ.
