Question:
A friend of mine has chronic ocular herpes in one eye which has resulted in corneal scarring. She is scheduled for PRK primarily to clean up the scarring to improve her vision. How effective is this procedure considering the procedure itself can cause scarring? Even though she will be taking acyclovir prophylactically before and after the procedure, is it likely this will initiate another outbreak of herpes?
Answer:
Dear Estaban, PRK is usually quite effective is clearing up superficial scars. The risk of re-activation is very low. Sincerely, Alexandra Chebil, M.D. The Lasik Center Irvine

Question:
Is there a min. age one should be to get this procedure done? What are average costs involved?
Answer:

Question:
I have read about potential night vision problems after laser surgery. I drive a lot at night. Is one laser procedure better than others in this regard? Thank you.
Answer:
Glare problems after LASIK are fortunately quite rare, because there is no haze development or scarring, typically (unlike RK or PRK). Occasionally, people may notice some night glare, but it tends to be mild, and temporary only. One issue that can predispose to night time glare is very large pupils which we check and will discuss with you beforehand. To schedule a complimentary consultation please call Pam, our laser vision coordinator, at 1-800-824-1073. Sincerely, John Zdral, M.D.

Question:
I was evaluated today for LASIK by Dr. Dan Durrie, (Kansas City) who has been rated as one of the top 10 refractive surgeons in the country. I was disappointed to find out that I have thin corneas (480mk), large pupils (8mm dialated), and am extremely myopic (-8.5)( this part I already knew). Dr. Durrie said that it would not be safe to try to correct me fully with LASIK since my corneas are so thin. However, he mentioned the possibility of correcting me to approximately -2.0 with LASIK, and then after three months, insert the INTACS rings. He said that he has had a number of patients who have had both procedures done with good results. I am wondering if the combination of these two procedures is safe, what the risks are, what kind of vision can I expect to have for the three months in between surgeries, and any other useful information you may have. Would you advise having this done? I have heard nothing but excellent things about Dr. Durrie, but would welcome the additional information. Thanks.
Answer:
Dear Brad, I have to admit that I have not had any exerience with this type of "combined" procedure, and can not advise you. Sincerely, Dr. Alexandra Chebil M.D. The Lasik Center
