Mrs. Q from Charlotte, North Carolina, presented to our practice complaining of loose and missing teeth. She was also concerned with some cavities in her front teeth. After completing a full exam with xrays it was obvious that Mrs. Q had fairly severe periodontal disease in her lower jaw. In cases like this, specific bacteria actually erode the ligaments and tissues that hold the teeth into the jaw bone. Eventually the teeth can become loose if the disease is not treated in the earlier stages and must be removed. Mrs. Q was disheartened by having to lose the rest of her lower teeth, but we were able to give her some options that were a vast improvement over her current dental situation. For Mrs. Q a strategy to remove the diseased teeth and preserve the bone with some grafting. Then an immediate lower denture was placed to act as a "band-aid". After some time the tissue will heal and 2 to 3 implants will be placed in the bone to help stabilize a lower denture. We will be restoring her top teeth as well. The photos below were taken immediately after surgically extracting the teeth and placing the lower denture. You can see that even with a denture the look is dramatically better, and eventually after implants, she will be able to chew and speak much better than when she first came to see us.
