Case: 10161 Category: Lapband (Laparoscopic Gastric Banding) Weight: 199 Gender: Male Description: In March of 2005, I was 325 pounds and was suffering from sleep apnea, diabetes and high cholesterol. My energy level was terrible and I needed a nap to get through the day. I had tried lots of diets but all I did was yoyo diet. When I heard about the gastric banding surgery, it made sense so I thought I would give it a try. Why not - nothing has made me lose weight! In April of 2005, I met with Doctor Watson and he told me that I needed to lose at least 15 pounds to qualify for the surgery. I was so excited about the opportunity that I lost 50 pounds prior to my surgery on 11/8/05. The surgery was simple. I showed up at 7:00am and went home the same day at 3:00pm. It took me about 10 days for a full recovery. From 11/8/05 11/8/06, my first year with the gastric band, I lost another 75 pounds. My weight now is 199 pounds and I am still in the process of losing. My comorbidities of sleep apnea, diabetes, and high cholesterol are all completely gone. I have much more energy, feel much better about myself, and I am told that I look much better and even look 10 years younger! My entire outlook on life has changed! The 126 pounds that I lost thus far feels like a miracle has happened. Even thought I had to pay for the surgery myself, it was well worth it. It cost me about $20,000 and I would do it again without hesitation. My biggest concern is gaining the weight back. With most diets, 90% gain the weight back but with the gastric band, I feel confident that I wont because it is an excellent tool for limiting calorie intake and I feel very comfortable with it. I am confident that sometime this year that I will reach my goal weight. The gastric band has been a very safe and effective method of losing weight and correcting the comorbidity problems that come with obesity. |
