Whitten Laser Eye Associates are highly trained and were performing LASIK years before many other doctors had started learning about it. We performed our first LASIK procedure in January, 1996. Since then we have performed more laser procedures on a monthly basis than any other practice in the Washington, D.C. area. Few doctors in the nation have spent as many years improving vision for so many eyes, as Whitten Laser Eye Associates. In fact, our own surgeons at Whitten Laser Eye Associates are so impressed with the procedure, they've each had it on their own eyes. Mark E. Whitten, M.D

Dr. Mark E. Whitten has been practicing ophthalmology in Washington, D.C. for over a decade, and is recognized by his peers as one of the finest and most skilled surgeons in the United States. An expert in refractive surgery, Dr. Whitten is the Regional Medical Director for TLC Laser Eye Centers.

Dr. Whitten received his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia and his Doctorate of Medicine from the Medical College of Virginia. He completed his residency and chief residency at the Washington National Eye Center at Washington Hospital Center. Previously, Dr. Whitten has functioned as Chairman of the Board at Washington Hospital Center.

Dr. Whitten is the past Chairman of the Medical Society of D.C. and past President of the Washington Ophthalmology Society. As a board-certified ophthalmologist, Dr. Whitten brings his extensive medical knowledge and experience to Whitten Laser Eye Associates. He has personally performed over 30,000 LASIK procedures, and is considered by VISX to be the Number One surgeon in the country. As a clinical instructor for VISX, he continues to teach surgical techniques to other ophthalmologists. Dr. Whitten began performing Laser Vision Correction in January of 1996.

L. Edward Perraut, Jr., M.D.

Dr. L. Edward Perraut, Jr, brings 20 years of ophthalmic expertise to the Whitten Laser Eye Associates team. He has functioned as the premier referral surgeon for laser treatment of retinal disorders in the Washington area. Dr. Perraut has served as the Chairman of the Board for the Washington National Eye Center, as president of the Washington, D.C. Ophthalmological Society and president of the Ophthalmology section of the Washington, D.C. Medical Society. He has taught at numerous medical centers including Georgetown University Hospital, George Washington University Hospital, Washington Hospital Center and Children's Hospital National Medical Center.

Dr. Perraut is a graduate of Princeton University and received his medical degree from the University of Maryland Medical School. He served as Chief Resident of the Ophthalmology department at the Washingto! n Hospital Center and completed his Fellowship in Vitreoretinal Diseases and Surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Dr. Perraut is our practice's technology expert. He is a laser vision correction specialist and has been performing LASIK exclusively since 1999. He has performed more than 10,000 procedures, and is recognized by VISX as a "Visx Star Surgeon". He regularly lectures on laser vision correction, especially on the latest technology. He teaches other surgeons how to perform the procedure.
