Counseling and Psychotherapy Services

I offer both short-term counseling and longer-term psychotherapy.  After our first few sessions I will be able to offer you some impressions of what our work could include based on how I understand your goals and needs.  My approach to the counseling/psychotherapy relationship is collaborative, and I encourage you to share with me your opinions and preferences about your experience.  My goal is to help you feel comfortable about sharing what's most important to you and to assist you in getting you connected with someone who can help you meet your goals.

Short-term counseling

  • between 2-3 sessions
  • to discuss hopes for counseling and possible next steps, either for working on your own, participating in ongoing longer-term psychotherapy with me, and/or exploring other options (e.g., referral to other resources, including bibliotherapy, engaging in group therapy, meeting with other therapist who may be a better match for helping you meet your goals, etc.)

Longer-term psychotherapy

  • number and frequency of sessions varies (i.e., this decision is based upon your needs, goals, financial feasibility and a mutual agreement on what frquency best addresses these issues)

Theoretical Orientation and Client Feedback

My theoretical orientation is integrationist, utilizing dynamic, relational-cultural and mindfulness-informed principles.  I've received feedback that I'm warm and accepting, a good listener and gently confrontative, and effective at helping people take positive steps in their lives.  I appreciate people's strengths and natural resilience when facing challenging choices and circumstances.

Common Concerns and Goals

Clients in counseling and psychotherapy with me express the common hope of increased happiness in life, but present with their own specific goals.  These goals are unique to the person and frequently constellate around certain themes, such as:

  • building confidence, self-acceptance, and a secure sense of identity
  • increasing their capacity to manage anxiety and depression
  • learning to trust themselves in relationships, career choices, academic endeavors, and other important domains
  • better understanding the relationship between shyness, introversion, and assertiveness/speaking up
  • recovering from compulsive overeating/binge eating and nurturing a positive relationship with food
  • managing performance anxiety in athletic, professional, and academic settings
  • exploring their feelings and thoughts to increase self-knowledge and insight
  • gaining skills and support to cope with challenging transitions and life experiences (i.e., changing jobs, managing health concerns,  acculturating to a new culture, becoming a parent, losing a family member or friend, etc.)
