Life shouldn't have to be so hard. Too often, folks struggle through each day barely keeping their heads above the proverbial waterline. If you're one of those people or one of those families, you're so busy just trying to survive that there's little time left for pursuing things that bring you joy and personal growth or fulfillment in your life. You may even wonder "what is the point" of pushing on when you feel so exhausted and frustrated. That's when I step in. I can throw a "lifeline" in after you to pull you closer to shore... or at least to where your feet can touch the bottom again so that you can catch your breath.
You may find that what seemed like insurmountable obstacles in your path while you were in crisis turn out to be quite manageable stepping stones when reexamined with the aid of a trained professional. I'll help you map a path towards achieving your personal goals. I'm not one of those "out there" psychologists who uses new-age techniques that jar the sensibilities. I'm a pretty straight forward person who tells you upfront where things are breaking down for you. I want to help you find your way FASTER within a compassionate, caring, honest, and safe environment.

Presently, he consults with various programs helping them to design and train staff in trauma focused treatment.Craig has worked directly with children and adults in out-patient, in-patient, and residential settings.Dr. Hjorth believes that one of the main tasks of therapy is to support individuals as they learn to become more congruent with their thoughts and emotions in order to learn new adaptive behaviors that will serve them well in school and work.
Dr. Hjorth has extensive experience with ADD children, adults, and families. He is attuned to individuals with difficulties in concentration and behavior, and specializes in teaching adaptive skills to those who need extra guidance in various settings, especially academic based environments.
Dr.Hjorth has also had extensive experience working with victims of trauma and consulting with trauma focused programs. His earlier research on abused children has made him acutely aware of the role extreme anxiety on brain development. The resulting post trauma stress is difficult to manage whether a child or adult. Most recently returning veterans have experienced such intense stress. Currently Dr. Hjorth is weekly consulting with Dr. Bruce Perry one of the leading experts on trauma.

An enduring solution to any problem begins with a thorough understanding of its components. For this reason I take the time to develop a thorough bio-psycho-social profile of each patient which incorporates the salient elements of his or her personal history and mental health issues. My methodology involves an initial 90 minute multidimensional evaluation providing a foundation of information to guide subsequent care.
The information garnered from our first session will work to identify your personal goals and serve to develop a long-term treatment plan. This may require only coming in for short medication management sessions or more in-depth periodic analysis, all personalized as necessary to the achievement of resolving underlying psychological conflicts. Elements of the treatment plan may involve a combination of individual, couples, family, or group psychotherapies, psycho-education, and/or medication management as indicated. The intensity, type, and length of treatments will depend on the individual’s goals and therapeutic needs. Throughout the course of treatment, we will periodically reassess the plan to assure that it is still in keeping with the patient’s progress.
Whether you are seeking simple symptomatic relief or fundamental psychological change, I encourage you to contact me for more information. I offer my personal, comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and treatment in a safe, warm, and caring office environment. All information discussed will be maintained with the highest level of privacy and confidentiality.

The unique benefits of my practice are my training beyond university level education as a therapist. I went to university in NYC, for undergraduate schooling at Fordham University and then for graduate schooling at Columbia University, and received the PhD at New York University. The training that went beyond these schools was at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy, also in NYC, and it was there that I received NYC Certifications in Psychotherapy, Psychoanalysis (contemporary psychoanalysis), and in Marriage/Couples Counseling. This was an additional 4 more years training. While at NYU, one of the professors suggested I publish the essays I was presenting on psychotherapy/psychoanalysis and in 2000, my book was published: Deepening Intimacy in Psychotherapy. I'm happy it's still in print.
My private practice in NYC was wonderful and I loved my patients and was truly upset when I moved from NY to AZ and so kept many of these patients on Skype (kept my NYC licensure, as well). I opened a practice in Sedona, AZ, in 2009, after leaving NYC (left there to marry a man living in Sedona) and have had the time of my life treating the Sedona patients who are such a joy to me. They often refer to me as a 'full service therapist' which I think is so endearing of them.
Over time, though, I began to feel isolated from colleagues. In NYC, I was surrounded by colleagues and that was lucky, but in Sedona, it was more difficult because it's such a small town. So, I began a practice in Phx (in addition to Sedona) and every week I drive 'down the hill' to Phx to see my Phx patients. I am so lucky to have the patients I have and to find colleagues, too. As a result, one of my Phx colleagues and I decided to co-found a Society so that we could bring in all the great Speakers on psychology to the Phx area. We founded the Arizona Psychoanalytic Society in 2010 with a mere 25 members. Now, just a few years later, we have more members than we could ever have imagined and we put on psychology presentations nearly every month and the people/colleagues who come are extremely supportive. We also have become a chapter of APA, Div 39 and as such we can provide continuing education credits for our 'salons.'
One last note on this: A few of my patients have begun attending our psychology salons and they love it - they feel excited by the topics and that they have an opportunity to learn about psychology and about human-kind and about how creative the mind is and how wonderful relationships can be when we consider who the other person really is, and who we ourselves are - in relationships. It doesn't get better than that.
