Educational Background
Dr. Furnas earned her Bachelor of Science and also a Master of Science from Stanford University in 1980. She then graduated from the UCLA School of Medicine in 1984, before returning to Stanford University to complete a six-year residency in Plastic Surgery. The focus of her present practice is exclusively on cosmetic surgery of the face, body and breast.
Years before co-founding Santa Rosa's Plastic Surgery Associates with her husband, Dr. Francisco Canales, Dr. Furnas spent a year in Kenya with her father, a plastic surgeon with the East African Flying Doctors. Her time there spurred a lifelong dedication to volunteerism, donating her time and skills in the service of children born with birth defects in Peru, Honduras, Western Samoa, the Philippines and El Salvador.
In 1990, Dr. Furnas received an appointment to the plastic surgery faculty at Harvard Medical School. At that time, her private practice was based at the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. Two years later, Dr. Furnas relocated to Sonoma County, where she has served as President of the Sonoma County Medical Association and as a delegate to the California Medical Association, as well as served on the editorial board of Sonoma County's Physician Magazine.
She is board certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery and is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the California Society of Plastic Surgeons and the prestigious American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
An accomplished artist, her passion for the arts also includes theatre, ballet and music; some of her artwork is on display at Plastic Surgery Associates of Santa Rosa. Dr. Furnas and her husband have two children, Diego and Siena.
