About Yan Lu, L.Ac., D.A.O.M. - Portland, Oregon (OR)

Dr. Lu is widely recognized as an exceptionally knowledgeable and experienced senior practitioner in the arts of acupuncture, herbal medicine and Chinese tuina massage for two decades.

Top Benefits:

  • Acupuncture What is Acupuncture? Acupuncture is one of several treatment modalities within traditional Chinese medicine. It involves the insertion of thin, sterile, needles into precise acupuncture points on the body. Acupuncture, along with Chinese tuina medical massage and herbal treatment, works with the natural vital energy of the body, called Qi, to promote the body?s own ability to heal itself. People generally find acupuncture treatments to be relaxing and rejuvenating. All needles used in our clinic are sterile and single use only. Why Does Acupuncture Work? The Chinese medical explanation is that there are channels, known as meridians, which are full of Qi, and blood running throughout the body. These channels bring nourishment and vitality to our various organs, muscles, bones, etc. An obstruction in one or part of these channels is like a dam, which reduces that nourishment to that part of the body down stream. By needling acupuncture points, we can unblock the obstruction in the meridians and restore a regular flow of Qi and blood through the meridians. This allows the body to receive the nourishment it needs to heal naturally, rather than through the more invasive use of synthetic drugs and injections via the bloodstream. According to the National Institute of Health, research has found that acupuncture can increase endorphins, the bodies natural pain killers, and increase blood circulation. Therefore, the injured tissues can recover naturally. Acupuncture can also affect the parts of the central nervous system related to sensation and involuntary body functions such as immune reactions, whereby a person?s blood pressure, blood flow and body temperature are regulated. What Can Acupuncture Treat? The World Health Organization lists diseases that respond well to acupuncture. These include many conditions such as pain, depression, anxiety, migraine, fatigue, insomnia, women?s health issues, digestive issues, etc. At Dr Yan Lu's acupuncture and massage clinic in Portland and Vancouver, he treats a wide variety of conditions.
  • Chinese Herbal Medicine Chinese herbal medicine is a very important part of traditional Chinese medicine. Its written history dates back 2,500 years, but herbal medicine has been practiced much longer than that. In China, traditional herbal remedies are still the backbone of medicine. Chinese herbs are natural and powerful medicines. When an herbal formula is prescribed, it usually contains 5-15 herbs, specialized according to the individual?s condition. For example, five patients with insomnia would very likely be prescribed five different herbal prescriptions, with each formula being tailored to the patient?s specific reason that caused the insomnia. Herbal formulas can be dispensed as raw herbs, in pills or granules according to patients? need. Herbal medicine can treat almost any condition that patients might go to their doctors for. In fact, modern researcher finds that herbal medicines often have less-side effects and are less expensive. Unlike western medicine, a skilled herbalist is able to prescribe effective formulas that address not only symptoms, but also the patients? underlying health by stimulating the body?s own natural healing process. At Dr Yan Lu's acupuncture and massage clinic in Portland and Vancouver he prescribes formulas according to patients? individual conditions, backed by ancient knowledge and modern research, allowing his patients to respond more effectively. He has learned and continues to learn many effective formulas from his father in law, who is a famous herbalist in China and has been practicing for over 50 years. Combing this family legacy with his own experience in the United States, Dr Lu is able to create his own formulas in order to help people more quickly.
  • Tuina (Chinese Medical Massage) Tuina ( pronounced as ?Twee-naa?) is a form of manual medicine, which has been used widely in traditional medicine clinics and hospitals in China for thousands of years. Tuina doctors in China perform the work of massage, acupressure, chiropractic and physical therapy combined. The techniques can be superficial and gentle or they can be deep and penetrating. Tuina is used to promote circulation, heal soft tissues and sports injuries, reset the relationship between bones and their surrounding tissues, increase joint flexibility, and balance yin-yang function of internal organs. Tuina doctors are trained in five-year educational programs in traditional medicine colleges in China. After graduation, they serve additional apprenticeships under the supervision of experienced Tuina doctors. Tuina doctors diagnoses specific problems by palpating meridians and performing orthopedic testing, and then treat all the problems simultaneously. For example, pain is usually not caused by meridian obstruction, muscle strain, bone or joint misalignment alone. Because of this, tuina doctors usually address all the problems together to achieve the best results. It is a unique medicine used for preventive, as well as therapeutic purposes, for both chronic and acute diseases. Diseases and conditions addressed in the U.S. by tuina practitioners include: arthritis, bone spurs, tendonitis, muscle tightness, bursitis, neck pain, back pain, sciatica, herniated disc, degenerated disc, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel, numbness and tingling in the arm and hand, hip pain, knee pain, foot pain, insomnia, fatigue, stroke recovery, poor childhood appetite, childhood asthma, as well as other ailments.
  • Pain syndromes: neck and shoulder pain, low back and hip pain, sciatica, numbness and tingling in the arms and fingers, arthritis, osteoporosis, tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, herniated disc disease, degenerated disc disease, fibromyalgia, joint and bone pain, auto accident and sports injuries. Pain management is Dr. Lu?s doctoral degree focus. His comprehensive treatment includes acupuncture, herbs and tuina medical massage which renders quicker and better results than just getting a single modality such as massage, acupuncture or chiropractic treatment. Because pain is usually not caused by muscle or joints or spine problems alone, comprehensive treatment addressing all the problems together is very important.
  • Gynecological disorders: PMS, menopausal syndromes, fibroid, endometriosis, habitual miscarriage, morning sickness, low libido, infertility, IVF supportive therapy (Dr. Lu?s doctoral degree focus).
