Educational Background

In 1980, the first radial keratotomy in the Philadelphia region was performed by Kremer Eye Center doctors. Since that time, Kremer surgeons have established themselves as pre-eminent authorities in vision correction. Kremer eye surgeons actively participate in FDA and other investigational protocols to develop the technology and procedures of tomorrow.

Among their many accomplishments, Kremer Surgeons:

• Performed the first LASIK surgery in North America
• Built the first excimer laser approved by the FDA for the LASIK procedure
• Were the first in the world to use radial keratotomy following keratomileusis
• Invented the pivoting microkeratome, which made "down-up" LASIK possible
• Invented the ultrasonic pachymeter, which provided more accurate measurements of corneal thickness for refractive surgery; this device, invented in 1980, continues to be an integral part of all vision correction procedures
• Invented the Kremer bifixation forceps to enable surgeons to simultaneously fixate the eye in two counterbalancing locations
• Invented multi-ring corneal markers, which enabled surgeons to better "map out" corneal locations
• Were the first in the world to use multiple regression analysis to improve predictability of refractive surgery
• Collaborated on the invention of the ophthalmic shield with removable compression device
• Invented the golf bifocal
• Led the region in performing no-stitch, no-injection cataract surgery
• Are among the most experienced in the country in performing the Visian lens implant, and make Kremer one of 6 national surgeon training sites for this procedure
• Were the first in the tri-state area to perform corneal transplants using IEK laser technology, for greatly increased healing times.
