Dr. Golden received his BA from the University of Chicago in 1977 and received the first-ever pre-doctoral Master’s Degree in Ophthalmology awarded by that institution. His doctorate degree was awarded at Saint Louis University in 1984. He continued his training in St. Louis with internship and residency.
In 1988 he joined his father and sister at their Cornea and External Disease practice, Eye Surgeons and Consultants, with offices in Chicago and Southern Wisconsin. In 1990 he became the head of that practice managing four ophthalmologists and three optometrists. While at Eye Surgeons and Consultants, in addition to interest in Cornea, he specialized in small incision cataract surgery, glaucoma and treatment of diabetic retinopathy. He was charged with training the other doctors in the practice and at the hospital with the modern techniques of phacoemulsification, small incision cataract surgery, and topical anesthesia.
In 1991 he became interested in refractive surgery and took the first course on the then new ALK machine followed by a fellowship in Houston. The use of the microkeratome for flap making in Automated Lamellar Keratoplasty made it the precursor of modern-day Lasik. As one of the early pioneers in the making of flaps, he taught and proctored ophthalmologists in the technique of Lasik, nationally and internationally. He has been hired by a number of different laser companies to help them open laser centers around the United States because of his extensive experience and careful attention to detail. Additionally, he has been a medical director of laser centers in Chicago, St. Louis, Minneapolis, and Indianapolis.

He has lectured at meetings such as the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, International Society of Refractive Surgery, American Academy of Optometry, American Optometric Association, American Society of Ophthalmic Administrators, EyeQuest, State of Washington Optometric Association, State of Wisconsin Optometric Association, and the International College of Surgeons. He is frequently asked by eye doctors to perform their eye laser procedures. He is presently the head of his own refractive practice, Doctors For Visual Freedom located in Arlington Heights. He practices general ophthalmology out of his Chicago practice, Golden Eye Surgeons and Consultants.
Dr. Golden’s describes his practice philosophy as careful attention to detail and the care of each and every patient as if they were a member of his own family. He works hard not to have any patient wait for care in his office and believes in the importance of communication with primary care doctors.
He is married, with a ten year old son. He enjoys travel especially the summer of 2007 when he and his son took a ten-week drive to Alaska. He enjoys cooking and entertaining from his home on the 86th floor of the John Hancock Building in Chicago. |
