Wendell P.Wong, M.D. has been in the field of ophthalmology since 1978 and is the Medical Director of TLC Laser Eye Centers Torrance. He is internationally renowned for his skill and dedication to his patients and the field of laser vision correction. Patients have come from across the United States and around the world to entrust their eyesight to Dr.Wong. Having a strong educational background,Dr.Wong attended University of Chicago for elementary and high school (graduating at 16), followed by Northwestern University for his B.A. and University of Illinois for his M.D. in 1977. He did his internship at the prestigious USC - LA County General Hospital/Estelle Doheny Eye Institute followed by a specialty ophthalmology residency at the top rated University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary. His professional eye surgery career began in 1981 at Kaiser Permanente where he helped to start the intraocular lens implant program. He left to begin private practice in 1983 to pursue his professional dream of helping people see without their corrective lenses, when he performed the first RK (radial keratotomy) procedure in the South Bay.
Dr.Wong has personal interest in this field because he once had severe myopia and astigmatism. In fact, he still holds the dubious distinction of being the most nearsighted eye surgeon in the United States to have had LASIK. His procedure was a complete success, and several years hence, he can still see 20/20. The visual freedom he and his patients enjoy is astounding.
Since 1983, Dr.Wong has performed over 40,000 refractive vision correction procedures, including over 27,000 LASIK procedures. Dr.Wong has hosted doctors from many countries to help them learn his techniques and unique approach to patient care. He helped start one of the first refractive eye surgery centers in mainland China. He was fortunate to be involved with these life enhancing, vision improving procedures from their onset working with his professor, mentor and good friend,Dr. Gholam Peyman, recognized as the creator of LASIK. Dr.Wong received the prestigious Star Surgeon Award for three years in a row, given to the 50 most experienced laser eye surgeons (out of 16,000) in the United States.
