In egg donation, as with normal pregnancy, timing is everything. A woman's uterus is receptive to an embryo only three or four days of her menstrual cycle. GIFT involves the placement of eggs and sperm in the fallopian tube. This requires a two step process. First, following stimulation with fertility medications eggs are retrieved surgically via transvaginal aspiration. This is followed by laparoscopy while under general anesthesia whereby the egg and sperm mixture is placed deep within one or both fallopian tubes.
