LocateADoc.com Insider

An inside interview with LocateADoc.com

Describe the most rewarding experience that you have had working with a patient?
There simply is no substitue than being able to be a part of something that has allowed a patient to have a life changing experience - whether it's in the form of cosmetic or reconstructive surgery...the smile on a patient's face that says "thank you Dr. Kayser for helping me change my life!"

What is your charity organization of choice and why?
My wife, two daughters and I are very active in our church and the events and charities that correspond to it, whether it's in local outreach in the city of Detroit or going on a mission trip to South America. Interestingly, some of the most memorable patient encounters occur when the stories of our faiths are shared - and the ability to engage with a patient on a deeper level than just talking about surgery.

What does living in the Roseville community mean to you?
Roseville is a quaint community in the northeast suburban area of the metropolitan Detroit area in southeast Michigan. My office is located in Roseville just on the border of St. Clair Shores and serves other communities such as Warren, Sterling Heights, Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Farmington Hills, Rochester, Livonia, Novi, Plymouth and also has great freeway access to even Ann Arbor, Port Huron and Toledo, Ohio!

What makes your specialties the right fields of medicine for you?
There is just no other profession or speciality other than plastic surgery that I could imagine myself doing. I have wanted to be a doctor since third grade and have been a builder and put things together since before I can remember. I am a perfectionist and will not stop until nothing more can be done, and with a sense of artistry that plastic surgery requires this is a perfect combination!

Finish this sentence: If I weren't a doctor I would be___.
a builder of some sort - just let me work with my hands! I play guitar and like to sing (just don't look for me on American Idol...)

When (your age) did you first realize you wanted to become a surgeon? And did you experience anything in particular to motivate you to achieve this prestigious goal?
I knew in third grade. I was in the library and read all the books on rocketry and then saw a book called: "Lifeline, the story of Your Circulatory System"; by the end of the year I could name all the bones in the body. I never did change my mind.

Can you tell us in your own words what you consider a perfect outcome of a surgical procedure?
I don't thing there is such a thing. I believe that patients are willing to accept limitations such as an implant or scar in order to achieve results that exceed the potential drawbacks associated with any surgical procedure. I spend a tremendous amount of time with each of my patients so that realistic goals are established, and as such, also allowing a relationship to develope so that a repore of trust can be made. Through all this, my patients often feel that their results exceeded what they expected before they came to my office.

What is your favorite procedure to perform and why?
Hard question. Plastic surgery is such a great speciality because there is such a diversity of prodecures and patients. Although a woman with severe asymmetry of the breast is extremely gratifying to work with, a baby born with a cleft lip offers no less enjoyment.

What procedure would you like to do more of and why?
Again, I enjoy the whole spectrum of plastic surgery.

In a perfect world, when would you like to retire, where would you go and what would you do?
Geez, I feel like this is the Miss America pageant! Actually, I do enjoy my profession in plastic surgery, but it is not the crux of my existance. As I am connected to my community in so many ways - through family, friends and church - it's difficult to know where I will be in 15 or 20 years. Our home, family and community is Michigan and as much as I love medicine, I am involved in a number of other things in my life to keep me busy for a long time. I have always admired those physicians who were able to retire at a reasonable time in their lives because they also had something else to live for. I think that's the sign of a well rounded and mature person.
