What is your favorite quote or saying?
God, give us grace to accept with serenity the things that cannot be changed, courage to change the things that should be changed, and the wisdom to distinguish the one from the other.
I believe theologian Dr. Reinhold Niebuhr wrote this Serenity prayer.
What makes your specialties the right fields of medicine for you?
I have always enjoyed working with people and enjoyed science and working with my hands. My father was an engineer, artist and sculptor and both of my sisters are artists by profession, so art plays a very big part of my life. I believe that plastic surgery is a perfect mixture of all of these characteristics. In order to excel in plastic surgery, one must have an artistic eye in addition to dexterity. Above all, the surgeon must be able to communicate with their patients in order to help them truly achieve their desired goals.
Finish this sentence: If I weren't a doctor I would be___.
an Architect or Artist.
When (your age) did you first realize you wanted to become a surgeon? And did you experience anything in particular to motivate you to achieve this prestigious goal?
While I was in high school I had the opportunity to work as an assistant to my uncle who was a Dentist in Atlanta, Georgia. I worked with him on Saturdays to assist him in taking care of his patients. I enjoyed the repoire that he had with his patients and the way that he was able to use his dexterity to care for their teeth. Like my uncle, I enjoyed sculpting and creating things with my hands and therefore, I knew that I was attracted to surgery for these reasons. However, it wasn?t until I was a third year medical student when I was watching a surgeon perform a Rhinoplasty procedure that I realized that I was particularly attracted to facial plastic surgery. I enjoyed the complexities and subtleties inherent in these procedures, and I was particularly interested in operations that I could immediately see the results and were visible to other people as well, not hidden by clothes or hidden deeply within the body.
