Describe the most rewarding experience that you have had working with a patient?
I recently did breast augmentation on a woman who was very small her entire adult life. When she saw herself and her new profile the day after the procedure she started to cry saying, "I love you Dr Porcaro. I have breasts now; you gave me breasts and a new body image which I'm sure I will become used to!"
What is your favorite quote or saying?
When the going gets tough the tough get going!
What makes your specialties the right fields of medicine for you?
My artistic nature allows me to envision the change in the appearance of my patients at the time of the consultation, well before the procedure itself.
When (your age) did you first realize you wanted to become a surgeon? And did you experience anything in particular to motivate you to achieve this prestigious goal?
While rotating thru the various specialties in medicine in my 3rd year of medical school at New Jersey Medical School I knew I was destined to become a surgeon! I love the challenges that surgery poses and the great personal reward it returns.
Can you tell us in your own words what you consider a perfect outcome of a surgical procedure?
The perfect outcome is having a completely satisfied patient and an excellent result!
What is your favorite procedure to perform and why?
My favorite procedures include liposculpture, breast augmentation and facial surgery where I note patient's improvement in self esteem, body image and self confidence along with a dramatic change in appearance.
What procedure would you like to do more of and why?
Labiaplasty and vaginoplasty. Gynecologic surgry represented a significant portion of my 20 year practice as a board certified surgeon in Maryland.
