About Stanley Cohen, DDS - Olney, Maryland (MD)

Our practice provides dental care for those who desire complete and comprehensive examinations and treatment.

All that is good begins with a HEALTHY SMILE!

You can be confident in the knowledge that we are a highly trained and skilled team of dental health professionals. We pride ourselves in providing the care you need to keep you healthy. To give you the best possible service and results, we are committed to continual education and learning. We attend dental lectures, meetings, and dental conventions to stay informed of new techniques, the latest products, and the newest equipment that a modern dental office can utilize to provide state-of-the-art dental care.

Infection control in our office is also very important to us. To protect our patients and ourselves, we strictly maintain sterilization and cross contamination processes using standards recommended by the American Dental Association (ADA), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the Center for Disease Control (CDC).

Periodontal disease. It attacks the gums and the bone that support the teeth. The word periodontal means "around the tooth". Plaque is a sticky film of food debris, bacteria, and saliva. If plaque is not removed, it turns into calculus (tartar). When plaque and calculus are not removed, they begin to destroy the gums and bone. Signs and symptoms of periodontal disease:

  • Bleeding gums - Gums should never bleed, even when you brush vigorously or use dental floss
  • New spacing between teeth - Caused by bone loss
  • Persistent bad breath - Caused by bacteria in the mouth
  • Pus around the teeth and gums - Sign that there is an infection present
  • Receding gums - Loss of gum around a tooth
  • Red and puffy gums - Gums should never be red or swollen
  • Tenderness or Discomfort - Plaque, calculus, and bacteria irritate the gums and teeth

If the disease is caught in the early stages of gingivitis, and no damage has been done, one to two regular cleanings will be recommended. You will also be given instructions on improving your daily oral hygiene habits and having regular dental cleanings. If the disease has progressed to more advanced stages, a special periodontal cleaning called scaling and root planning (deep cleaning) will be recommended. In addition to your periodontal cleaning and evaluation, your appointment will usually include:

  • Examination of diagnostic x-rays (radiographs): Essential for detection of decay, tumors, cysts, and bone loss. X-rays also help determine tooth and root positions
  • Complete evaluation and examination of the TMJ (temporomandibular joints)
  • Examination of existing restorations: Check current fillings, crowns, etc.
  • Examination of tooth decay: Check all tooth surfaces for decay
  • Oral cancer screening: Check the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, cheek tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer
  • Oral hygiene recommendations: Review and recommend oral hygiene aids as needed. (Electric toothbrushes, special periodontal brushes, fluorides, rinses, etc.)
  • Teeth polishing: Remove stain and plaque that is not otherwise removed during tooth brushing and scaling.

In the past decade there has been a dramatic interest in restorative dentistry to improve ones health and appearance. We all realize that having a healthy, bright, beautiful smile enhances our appearance and allows us to smile with confidence. Thanks to the advances in modern dentistry, we are able to improve our oral health and our appearance as well. Restorative dental treatments can:

  • Change the size, shape, and alignment of certain teeth (Invisalign)
  • Fill in unattractive spaces between teeth
  • Improve or correct bites
  • Lighten or brighten the color of teeth (Tooth Whitening)
  • Repair decayed, broken, cracked, or chipped teeth
  • Replace missing teeth (Implant dentistry)
  • Replace old, unattractive dental treatments

As a practice, we are true believers that preventative care and education are the keys to optimal dental health. We focus on thorough exams, checking the overall health of your teeth and gums, performing oral cancer exams, and taking x-rays when necessary. We also know that routine cleanings, flossing, sealants, and fluoride are all helpful in preventing dental disease. A review of your medical history can help us stay informed of your overall health, any new medications, and any illnesses that may impact your dental health. Stanley Cohen, DDS and his entire team is dedicated to providing you with excellent, personalized care and service to make your visits as comfortable and pleasant as possible.
