Shaping Their Future: GBMC's Bariatric Surgery Program Provides Hope and Help
At 47, Terri Nearey was at a dead end. Tipping the scales at 264 pounds, she tried diet after diet, only to gain the weight—and more—back. "I could barely walk and I knew that I had to make a decision about my life," she recalls. Working in a garden center, she found it difficult to perform her job duties. "It was at the point where I felt like dying," she says.
Ms. Nearey began investigating bariatric surgery and eventually turned to David G. von Rueden, MD, a specialist in surgical weight loss procedures, for help. After learning more through an information session, followed by an appointment with Dr. von Rueden, she decided to have surgery on July 15, 2004.
More than five months later, she has lost 77 pounds. "I feel as though I have so much life to live. I feel 20 years younger." Noting that she is well on her way to her ideal weight, she credits Dr. von Rueden, the support of GBMC, her husband, two grown sons and friends for her success.
Ms. Nearey is not alone. The National Institutes of Health reports that 25 percent of American adults are obese. In real terms that translates to women who have more than 30 percent body fat and men who have more than 25 percent body fat. |
