Most cosmetic surgery procedures are performed at Minneapolis Plastic Surgery's free-standing, state-of-the-art, office surgical center at the main office in Golden Valley, Minnesota. The clinic's main facility includes three fully-equipped operating rooms, complete anesthesia care, treatment and minor procedure room, individual preparation and recovery areas, aesthetic suites, post-operative massage therapy, aesthetic area, and on-site surgical and cosmetic laser services. Post-operative patients can utilize a separate, private waiting area, and a separate exit can be used by patients after their surgery. The facility is accredited by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (AAAASF), and is evaluated annually to ensure that it meets accreditation standards. Operative procedures requiring overnight or inpatient care are performed at one of several hospitals where MPS's plastic surgeons have full surgical privileges.
Dr. Richard Tholen is the president of Minneapolis Plastic Surgery, Ltd., and has been associated with MPS since he completed seven years of surgical training at the Mayo Clinic in 1987. He has completed additional training in cosmetic surgery, breast surgery, suction-assisted lipoplasty and ultrasonic lipoplasty, and laser surgery. He served as co-director for laser education at Abbott Northwestern Hospital and was co-chairman for annual courses in Cutaneous Laser Surgery taught at Abbott's Laser Center, Minimally Invasive Care Center, and Center for Cosmetic Care. As a faculty member of Laser Centers of America, he has taught numerous courses nationally, and has been an invited instructor in Seoul, Korea. Dr. Tholen has written and presented over 150 papers on all aspects of cosmetic and other plastic surgical procedures as visiting professor, invited lecturer at national plastic surgery meetings, and individually. As a plastic surgeon for Operation Smile International, he has performed cleft lip and palate surgery for children in Peru, Venezuela, Philippines, Romania, and Honduras. His private practice is aesthetic in nature, with special interest in cosmetic breast surgery, facial surgery, body contouring, and laser surgery, as well as for other aesthetic concerns.
