Describe the most rewarding experience that you have had working with a patient?
While it is not a singular experience, one thing that always warms my heart is how frequently parents tell me that they can sense that I love my work. Often parents tell me that my staff and I always seem happy and that there is a very upbeat atmposphere in our office. They say that we always seem like we are having fun. How right they are !
What is your favorite quote or saying?
My favorite quote is " Today is the first day of the rest of your life ". I tell myself that almost everyday and my own kids as well. People are always concerned about things they didn't do, or did wrong yesterday. You always have an opportunity to do the right thing everyday. Wake up and start the day anew !
Finish this sentence: If I weren't a doctor I would be___.
If I weren't an orthodontist I'd love to design golf courses. Though I am a novice golfer, I love design, wide open spaces, warm weather, horticulture and quiet. Perhaps if I didn't get so distracted by the beauty of the outdoors I could improve my game. Til then, I'll just make do with appreciating the course !
When (your age) did you first realize you wanted to enter the health & medical field? And did you experience anything in particular to motivate you to achieve this prestigious goal?
I first considered dentistry at the end of my junior year in college. I was studying humanities largely and I met a dentist who was holistic in his approach to dentistry. I helped him edit a newsletter on health issues and he asked if I ever considered becoming a dentist. He explained how interesting and fun his days were. I worked with him a day a week and then two months later I enrolled in chemistry- at the end of my junior hear. I never looked back.
What is your favorite procedure to perform and why?
My favorite procedure is placing braces. First, I love the accuracy and precision of it. Second, I feel responsible to assure nervous patients and concerned parents that they are making a great decision that they will appreciate their entire lives. I am always a hero the day I take the braces off-that's simple. The challenge is energizing and reassuring the patients that they are doing a great thing for themselves when they begin treatment.
What procedure would you like to do more of and why?
Lately I have become interested in volunteering with international organizations that provide orthodontic care to those in underserved populations. With three teenage kids it's hard to find the time but I have a growing desire to donate time to those in need who have little access to good dental care.
In a perfect world, when would you like to retire, where would you go and what would you do?
Retirement- what a concept ! Seems so far away and I feel like I have so much to do yet. I will probably exercise more, knit more complex patterns, travel during winter months. I'm a voracious reader so I'll continue to read. I'd like to learn black and white photography. So much to do, so little time...
