Describe the most rewarding experience that you have had working with a patient?
By far the most rewarding experiences come from treating children. Helping to repair an injury in a child, be it from an accident or congenital anomaly, can bring hope to a family. A particularly rewarding experience I have had was in reconstructing the foot of a child who was involved in a terrible lawn mower accident. Although the entire process took months, to see him run into the office after other physicians had told them he'd never walk on that leg again was amazing. It's cases like these that get to the core of what plastic surgery is all about.
What does living in the Boca Raton community mean to you?
I have recently moved to Boca Raton, FL to escape the brutal winters up north. Having grown up in Michigan, I've had my share of ice storms and snow drifts. Besides from the obvious improvement in the weather, the people are just as warm. The city has a true sense of community and culture. And with the influx of "snowbirds" each season, there's never a dull moment!
What makes your specialties the right fields of medicine for you?
Plastic surgery allows me to be both artistic and precise. My concept of plastic surgery is to use a basic set of techniques in different combinations to solve even the most complex of problems. Each patient has a unique set of issues and therefore every operation is tailored to the patient. No one procedure works well for everyone. This is often referred to as "out of the box" thinking. For plastic surgeons, we live outside the box.
What is your favorite procedure to perform and why?
My favorite procedure to perform is breast reconstruction after mastectomy. With breast cancer being so prevalent, I feel that restoring a sense of feminity, beauty, and completeness is paramount for a patient undergoing mastectomy. Also, because every woman is different, the decision making in choosing the right form of reconstruction (implants vs. her own tissue) can be a complex and difficult one. Working with breast cancer patients is one of the most rewarding aspects of my profession.
What procedure would you like to do more of and why?
I particularly enjoy rhinoplasty (nosejob) surgery. It is truely an art to reconstruct the framework of a nose to improve the shape and appearance. Subtle changes often produce dramatic results. The precision of this procedure is what interests me most of all.
In a perfect world, when would you like to retire, where would you go and what would you do?
In a perfect world, I would love to split my time between fishing in South Florida and relaxing in the English countryside. Sport fishing off the coast of Florida is hard to beat for excitement and the quiet calm of the Cotswolds is a place I would love to return to.
