Describe the most rewarding experience that you have had working with a patient?
Watching the changes that happen in a person because their smile improves. Orthodontics can make an enormous difference in someone's life by giving them more confidence and self esteem. The most rewarding experience I have on a daily basis is seeing a patient smile more easily as treatment progresses, and the day the appliances are removed it is very rewarding to see the transformation that has occured. It can completely change the way a person feels about themself, and therefore is more confident in life, from school and job interviews, to dating and improved social skills. I haven't been rewarded by just one experience to mentiion here- I really am rewarded every day I get to do what I do.
What is your charity organization of choice and why?
I support Greenville County Schools. Our educational system needs all the help it can get, and by supporting the schools it puts money in the classroom and puts it back into parent's pockets. By purchasing things the schools need such as class T-shirts and Agendas, the money normally used to purchase those items can be utilized for other items that budget cuts have affected.
What does living in the Simpsonville community mean to you?
I have lived in Simpsonville the entire time I have practiced here. My child is being raised in this community, and she attends school here. By living in and supporting the Simpsonville community, it makes me feel like I am a part of what I do.
What is your favorite quote or saying?
Proverbs 3:5-6: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your path straight."
What makes your specialties the right fields of medicine for you?
I have always liked to work with my hands, and will always be a child at heart. I fit so well into the role I have been placed, because I am extremely detail oriented and obsessive/compulsive, but have the ability to relate to children and adolescents extremely well. My specialty allows me to be extremely detail oriented and critical, but have fun with the kids while transforming their smile.
Finish this sentence: If I weren't a doctor I would be___.
If I weren't a doctor I would be a teacher. I already am in a lot of ways, and I have always tutored kids and mentored others. I am a visiting teacher at the Medical University of South Caroilina in Charleston in the graduate Orthodontc Program, and it is a perfect fit. If I couldn't practice anymore, I would teach full time.
When (your age) did you first realize you wanted to enter the health & medical field? And did you experience anything in particular to motivate you to achieve this prestigious goal?
During my pre teen years I had to have some dental work done, and the dentist I visited was amazing. I didn't even realize until years later the difficulty or extent of what I had done. He made it look easy, and when I returned years later, he was a great mentor for me.
Can you tell us in your own words what you consider a perfect outcome of a surgical procedure?
A smile that is functionally perfect and will last a lifetime. If this is done, it will always be beautiful.
In a perfect world, when would you like to retire, where would you go and what would you do?
I will never fully retire- I will continue to contribute to my specialty by teaching and mentoring other young orthodontsts for the rest of my life.
