Psychotherapy with a special focus on creative artists . . .
Clinical and Forensic Psychologist
My approach to therapy emphasizes insight, self-awareness and empowerment to help people do better and have more gratifying lives. Through an alliance of trust and collaboration, we work together to understand the meaning of symptoms, to get "un-stuck," and to rediscover your capacity to make the meaningful choices that are right for you. Growth occurs in an atmosphere of respect, compassion and a belief in the human capacity for healing, change and reparation. I spent years studying the effects of traumatic events on people's lives.
I have worked extensively with victims of violent crime and sexual abuse, helping people cope with the aftermath of recent incidents and those that occurred long ago. In addition to my work with individuals, I developed an award-winning program called Healing Together for couples who want to learn to be more intimate and to support one another as they recover from her past or recent sexual assault. I also work with couples facing challenges trying to conceive a child, and those who simply want to enhance their relationship and communication skills. A special area of interest includes working with creative artists and entertainment industry professionals to increase confidence and access to creative expression, while identifying and modifying any self-destructive patterns inhibiting professional achievement.
In addition to my private practice, I have been an adjunct faculty member at California School of Professional Psychology/Alliant International University, where I have taught Clinical Interviewing, Ethics and Professional Development, Sex Roles and Gender, and Intercultural Processes and Human Diversity to doctoral students. As a Forensic Psychologist I provide psychological sentencing and competency evaluations to attorneys by request, as well as testifying as an expert witness. My training includes graduating summa cum laude from UCLA, where I was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and a Doctor of Psychology degree at California School of Professional Psychology - Los Angeles, where I received the Outstanding Doctoral Project award. I completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship culminating in a Certificate of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy at Wright Institute Los Angeles.
I now offer EMDR, an empirically validated short-term treatment for trauma which is a "Category A" recommended treatment by the VA and Homeland Security for treating posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
I highly recommend Dr. Cheryl Arutt. Her keen understanding of the artistic spirit and mind has transformed my life. She has broadened my perspective, reconnected me to my instinct and she has taught me that I can do whatever I set my mind to. She is exceptional person and her work continues to generate positive and productive change in my life. May 4, 2010 Top qualities: Expert , High Integrity , Creative-Jamie, Actor/Writer
