Describe the most rewarding experience that you have had working with a patient?
A female patient that had 'lived with' her unsightly smile for years had a smile makeover. When she looked in the mirror to preview the veneers, she teared up. It was so emotional that both the assistant and I were also speechless. When she could speak, she said "I've waited for this my whole life". It was so sincere. It felt good to know we were a part of making her dreams come true.
What is your charity organization of choice and why?
Project Pet-- I have always loved animals, especially cats. Being on the board allows me to help the voiceless animals get the care they need. I believe in spaying/neutering to decrease pet overpopulation so that we will no longer have to euthanize animals. Every animal deserves a happy home and should be safe. Project Pet stands up for animal rights in addition to finding good homes for the homeless.
What is your favorite quote or saying?
The vision you see in your mind, the ideals you have in your heart, that you will live your life by, that you will become.
Finish this sentence: If I weren't a doctor I would be___.
an event organizer and match maker. I am extremely involved in social events and enjoy planning and preparing for them. In the past, I have held many offices for various dental clubs and excel at this because of my organizational and social skills.
Can you tell us in your own words what you consider a perfect outcome of a surgical procedure?
Any medical procedure is a success when the doctor knows that the person's status has improved functionally and aesthetically. AND when the patient is pleased.
What is your favorite procedure to perform and why?
My perfect day is seeing one patient that is either restoring their smile or becoming healthier by removing their 'old metal fillings' with new tooth colored ones. I like them to be on nitrous or having sedation dentistry too so that I know they will be completely comfortable and relaxed. I like seeing the immediate result of their smile and to feel their happiness.
What procedure would you like to do more of and why?
Sleep dentistry. It is so safe and easy for patients. Especially fear type patients. Time passes quickly for them and they have no memory of the dental portion of their visit. It's incredible. I wish more people would take advantage of it.
In a perfect world, when would you like to retire, where would you go and what would you do?
I'll never retire from dentistry 100% until I'm 70. I plan to work about 2 days a week when my kids go to college and to travel. I prefer traveling in the states but I look forward to staying months at a time in Europe to really 'feel the culture' and learn the languages. Right now I know some German and Spanish, but my dream would be to be multilingual. Charleston, SC is our favorite destination. It feels like a second home. I love the historical value of the city and the romance.
