Describe the most rewarding experience that you have had working with a patient?
One of the most recent involved a 30 something year old woman who wanted to have an abdominoplasty, but was very apprehensive. We sat and talked for an extended period of time before the procedure.
She finally had the procedure done, and now I was seeing her for her first post-op visit. As I removed the dressing, she literally screamed and and began crying with both relief and excitement as she saw her flat contoured abdomen. She began tearfully thanking me. I then smiled and hugged her and quickly walked out of the room, as I too, nearly became tearful witnessing her absolute joy and satisfaction.
It was then that I realized we actually can have a profound affect on people's lives. To know that you, and as plastic surgeon, have the potential to do that day after day is incredibly satisfying.
What is your favorite quote or saying?
Vision with out action is just a dream, action without vision is merely passing time, but vision with action can change the world.
When (your age) did you first realize you wanted to enter the health & medical field? And did you experience anything in particular to motivate you to achieve this prestigious goal?
It is my opinion that every doctor should be a patient for a day or two to experience what it's like from the other side.
As a 10 month old crawling toddler, I bit into an electric cord and sustained a burn to my mouth. After several procedures during childhood, I had my final procedure performed on my mouth at age 13.
I recall the glowing terms my mother would use in referring to the plastic surgeons who reconstructed my mouth. My mother thought those plastic surgeons were the kindest and most compassionate doctors she had ever encountered. So I knew very early that this would be a good thing to do.
Can you tell us in your own words what you consider a perfect outcome of a surgical procedure?
As a perfectionist, I realize there IS truly no perfect outcome. My favorite procedure is the abdominoplasty. We are always looking for a way to make it better; to make the scar shorter....to make the scar lower..to make it tighter..etc. The best outcome for me is the exceedingly happy, excited patient who feels their life has been positively affected.
What is your favorite procedure to perform and why?
My favorite procedure is the tummy tuck. It's my favorite because its the one I feel that I do best. It typically produces a dramatic result. I consistently see happy patients, and it's obvious to me and anyone, what ALL patients desire....A flat abdomen. Unlike breasts, there are no variations is sizes that people desire. Everyone wants their abdomen flat.
