Describe the most rewarding experience that you have had working with a patient?
I had a patient who came in for a Body Jet liposuction consult and she was teary telling me how she couldn't walk in front of anyone without anxiety about her "saddlebags". She came back for a postop visit a month later with the biggest smile and her confidence in herself was so visible. It is very rewarding helping someone's self esteem.
What is your charity organization of choice and why?
All of the profits from our center go to support missionary work home and abroad. My number one charity is a Methodist Mission in Jamaica that I have been working at for over 10 years. I have a permanent medical license there and work there twice a year. We are also helping with an orphanage in Tanzania, Kids Alive International in the Dominican Republic and hope to continue to support many others in the years to come.
What does living in the Lawrence community mean to you?
ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK! One can not live here without feeling the love for our college sports teams. With the University of Kansas and Haskell Indian College at our doorstep, we are a thriving, intellectual community. My patients always challenge me with their great questions. It keeps me on my toes.
What makes your specialties the right fields of medicine for you?
I love diversity! I enjoy doing and learning lots of different things. Family practice has afforded me the opportunity to be involved in medicine from the moment of birth until the end. I have been privileged to grow and add new services that my patients are interested in. It is not only a privilege but a responsibility to remain educated in a variety of areas so it keeps me challenged.
Finish this sentence: If I weren't a doctor I would be___.
an Industrial Hygienist. Before I went to medical school I worked for OSHA and probably would have continued in that field.
Can you tell us in your own words what you consider a perfect outcome of a surgical procedure?
A perfect outcome is one in which both myself and the patient feel we have obtained their goal - sometimes that means discussing what is "realistic" before the procedure and it can also mean I refer the patient to someone else if it is in their best interests.
What is your favorite procedure to perform and why?
The one I'm doing right then - because that is the patient who matters most at the time.
What procedure would you like to do more of and why?
I would like to learn neck lifts - because I need one!
In a perfect world, when would you like to retire, where would you go and what would you do?
I would retire from my current job in about 5 years and work with Doctors without Borders or another agency where I can travel abroad and spend longer periods of time doing missionary work.
