Describe the most rewarding experience that you have had working with a patient?
The most rewarding patient experience would be my residency and fellowship training. Long hours for little pay, but the learning was almost nonstop and I developed new skills almost every day. Very rewarding. An individual patient is impossible to pin down ? dozens from birth defects to trauma to cancer treatment or diagnosis come to mind.
What is your charity organization of choice and why?
I would think that my wife and I have 8-10 charities to whom we regularly donate, but I feel the best about giving randomly at the individual level ? homeless guy asleep on the street. That and our sponsored child in Columbia.
What does living in the Reston community mean to you?
Enjoying a vibrant and growing area and one with a lot of potential to get even better.
What is your favorite quote or saying?
In the valley of the blind, the one eyed man is king.
What makes your specialties the right fields of medicine for you?
Need for compassion and problem solving abilities, especially those that deal with spatial relations. I am very good at conceptualizing what happens in 3 dimensions.
Finish this sentence: If I weren't a doctor I would be___.
An architect or chef.
When (your age) did you first realize you wanted to enter the health & medical field? And did you experience anything in particular to motivate you to achieve this prestigious goal?
I didn?t know I would be a surgeon until close to my senior year of medical school, I was open to a variety of things until then. It was actually on an elective rotation in plastic surgery that I found the specialty that fit my skills.
Can you tell us in your own words what you consider a perfect outcome of a surgical procedure?
One in which both the patient and I were happy.
What is your favorite procedure to perform and why?
Can?t be just one, that is why this field is so great ? the diversity.
What procedure would you like to do more of and why?
Just more of what I do from face lifts to breast augmentation. Facelift patients get such a big benefit in turning back the clock, and breast augmentation and tummy tuck patients get such an immediate result. They are both great.
In a perfect world, when would you like to retire, where would you go and what would you do?
I wouldn?t look at retirement until it?s not fun anymore ? that?s a ways off. I probably won?t go far, I really like the area. I see myself designing and building stuff. Perfect world ? design, build, run my own farm based restaurant with enough time for horses ? jumping of course.
