Describe the most rewarding experience that you have had working with a patient?
Men considering surgery for prostate cancer are often more concerned about losing the ability to have an erection than about being cured of the cancer. My goal in performing nerve-sparing robotic prostatectomy is this trifecta: 1. CURE THE CANCER 2. PRESERVE SEXUAL FUNCTION 3. PRESERVE URINARY CONTINENCE Many patients recover after robotic prostatectomy with this ideal trifecta. But a patient I saw back recently, really makes me value my excellent training in this particular procedure. He returned one week after surgery to have his catheter removed. After reviewing his pathology report, I asked him if he had any difficulties in the immediate post-op period. His response made all the training I have been through worthwhile. He said, "Everything has been fine, doc, except it's been pretty uncomfortable every time I have an erection with this damn tube in my penis!"
What makes your specialties the right fields of medicine for you?
Urology is a great mix of medicine, surgery, and talking to people about personal issues. My patients appreciate my straightforward approach to their medical conditions. Whether I am talking to a man about impotence, a woman about vaginal prolapse, or a family member about a new cancer diagnosis, I will always be honest and forthright.
