Describe the most rewarding experience that you have had working with a patient?
This one is easy to answer -- I love to see people succeed, that's what touches my heart. So the most rewarding experiences I've had, without doubt, involve being a part of the positive change that people experience through successful therapy. When someone comes to therapy in pain and "graduates" weeks or months later, it touches me in a way that nothing else can. The only thing that comes close is running into a former client, perhaps someone I haven't seen in years, and seeing that they are better. That life has changed for them in a way they may not have been able to achieve without help. And, years later, they continue to benefit from the work we did together.
What is your favorite quote or saying?
It's a quote from Yoda. (Yes, he of "Star Wars" -- just because he's fictional doesn't mean he wasn't a wise soul.) Yoda said: "Try not. Do or do not. There is no try." I find this is a frequent and important theme for the people who seek therapy (and probably for many people who have never sought it). My new clients often say that they are "trying" to do what they want to achieve, as opposed to making a true commitment to "doing" what they really want to achieve. When we say we "tried," we really mean that we failed. So I do my best to eliminate the words "I'll try" from my clients' vocabularies and replace it with words of committed action like "I'll do my best." And, so, I do my best to help people succeed, to get off the treadmill of simply trying to succeeed.
What makes your specialties the right fields of medicine for you?
I began undergraduate school as a psychology major, with the goal of being in private practice as therapist. In school, I took a wrong turn (for me) and graduated with a business degree. This led to a 15-year career in business that, from those looking on, appeared to be successful and lucrative. But my various "successful" careers in business didn't touch my heart. And so, in my late 30's, I left a high-paying career and returned to graduate school to follow my dream. Nearly twenty years later, I've never regretted the decision. Being a therapist is by far the most rewarding work I've ever done, and I've never looked back.
What Sets Us Apart
My clients say that I have an unusual ability to quickly understand them and their issues and get the therapeutic ball rolling. My training in a wide variety of therapeutic techniques means that I am able to choose the tool that best fits each situation.
