Meryl Streep Says No to Botox

Meryl Streep is among Hollywood’s most gracefully aging actresses, and though she’s in her ‘60s, she claims that she will never go under the knife to preserve her youthful looks. In a recent article on EntertainmentShowBiz.com, Meryl Streep reportedly made the following statement about getting Botox and other plastic surgery procedures:

“To each his own. I really understand the chagrin that accompanies ageing, especially for a woman, but I think people look funny when they freeze their faces…in Los Angeles, there’s a lot of that. I pick up on the part that doesn’t move on a face. I’m immediately drawn to it and that’s the opposite of what you’re intending. You pull focus to the area that’s been worked on.”

Meryl Streep is not alone. Many other Hollywood celebrities including Sally Field, Natalie Portman and Sharon Stone agree that they are betting off letting nature take its course than joining the media and millions of women who become obsessed and preoccupied with maintaining a youthful look.

51-year old Sharon Stone recently told Tatler Magazine that “I’ve had zero; nothing done to myself: no lifting, no botox, no injectables.”  The Entertainment Showbiz website reports that “Sharon also panned the prevalent obsession for the salad-diet or size-zero figure and takes pride on the natural charm she’s endowed with. And, she owes her gorgeous, pristine looks to exercising and feeling healthy and not to cutting down on food.”

Still, there are hundreds of celebrities that continue to go under the knife in hopes of maintaining their 20-something looks. And for some, the procedure ends up being a plastic surgery disaster. Among the top celebrity plastic surgery disasters are: Tara Reid (stomach liposuction), Janet Jackson (breast implants) Jessica Simpson (lip augmentation), Tori Spelling (breast implants), Vivica Fox (breast implants) and Melanie Griffith (facelift surgery). Woman Sues for $250K After Botched Laser Skin Rejuvenation Treatment

Patient Deborah Brown filed a lawsuit against Faces Etc. Permanent Cosmetics LLC in Davidson County Circuit Court earlier this month because a botched laser skin rejuvenation treatment left her in extreme pain and required her to visit the burn unit at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

According to Ms. Brown, her DOT procedure (dermal optical thermolysis) performed on July 17 left her with severe wounds and burns on her face and neck. The DOT procedure is designed to remove age spots, freckles, acne scars and other skin lesions with the application of a heated laser. The heat from the system is designed to create make deep burns within the dermis, which in turn helps to promote collagen production and increases cell turnover. One of the side effects of these procedures is scarring and even burning. The DOTTHerapy.com website reports that this is an ideal treatment for sun damage, skin laxity and brown spots, and promises rapid healing with little or no anesthesia required.

Faces, Etc. offers several permanent makeup procedures that use a similar laser device to get results. Ms. Brown believes that the center “negligently failed to use the proper technique in performing the procedure and failed to set the device on the proper setting…[the center] also failed to use proper conditioning procedures.”

Ms. Brown is suing the center for $250,000 in damages.

Faces, Etc. describes itself as a specialist in permanent makeup and is located in Old Hickory, Tennessee. The center’s listing of services of procedures includes permanent makeup for the lips, eyebrows and eyes, as well as cosmetic enhancements such as mucosal eyeliner, treatment for alopecia, areola reconstruction and stretchmark or scar camouflage procedures. The center offers facial fillers including Botox, Restyalne, Juvederm and Radiesse, and does list laser skin resurfacing procedures using the DOT Therapy system on its website.

Washington State Cosmetic Surgeon Botches Teen’s Breast Surgery

A cosmetic surgeon from Moses Lake, Washington has been accused of unprofessional conduct for a recent breast reduction and liposuction procedure performed on a 15-year old girl.

Dr. Thomas Laney reportedly lacked the education and training needed to perform both procedures and ended up botching the breast reduction procedure. The Medical Quality Assurance Commission reports that the patient’s breasts “now have an aesthetically odd and unnatural appearance” and the doctor should not have agreed to perform liposuction on the 15-year old girl.

The girl sued the doctor three years after the surgery was performed, and a complaint was submitted to the state board in late 2008. However, the Medical Quality Assurance Commission only just recently proceeded with filing charges.

According to Steven Fitzer, the doctor’s attorney, the patient had received permission from her parents to go ahead with the surgery. “She had sought out care from a number of plastic surgeons…she went through an elaborate evaluation and consent process. The parents were fully advised of the situation and signed multiple consent forms acknowledging the risks, benefit and alternatives to the procedure.” (Source: FoxNews.com)

The doctor holds a medical degree from the University of Nebraska and a dentistry degree from Creighton University of Nebraska. He is also certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and is a member of the American Board of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

The American Board of Plastic Surgery continues to advise patients to do as much research as possible about the procedure and the surgeon before pursuing treatment. The organization points out that even when a doctor is board-certified, they may not have the experience and knowledge needed to perform certain types of surgery.

According to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Dr. Laney had been sued 10 times by patients and their families in 2005.

South Carolina Plastic Surgery Firm Under Investigation for Administering Bad Botox

j0399041A plastic surgery firm in South Carolina is under investigation for administering cheaper versions of Botox that have not been approved the U.S. Food and Drug Administration into 41 patients. According to an indictment filed in early July 2009, the company purchased approximately 10 vials of the Botox knock-off from an Arizona research center in 2004. The firm misled many patients by convincing them that the Botox alternative was safe, and were able to offer patients a substantially-cheaper treatment than the conventional Botox treatment.

Southeastern Plastic Surgery of South Carolina has been charged with dispensing an imitation Botox product and also for relabeling the product in order to intentionally mislead patients. The company must now forfeit over $15,000 in proceeds from the revenue generated from the Botox-alternative treatments.

Anyone interested in getting Botox injections must make sure that the injection will be administered in a medically-supervised setting, and that the medical spa or cosmetic surgery center has a strong track record. Some medical spas and day spas that offer deep discounts on Botox and other injectables are often using lower-quality products or in some cases, imitation products. It’s important to understand that Botox and other injectables cannot be discounted excessively, and that the average price (with discounts) around the United States ranges from $300 to $450+ per injection.

In the case of the Southeastern Plastic Surgery, it may have been difficult to determine whether the company was dispensing legitimate Botox or the knock-offs. The plastic surgery firm’s website is very professional, and promotes itself as a “state-of-the-art AAAA surgical suite for your comfort, safety and privacy.” The company also encourages patients to “trust our board-certified surgeons and their team of highly skilled clinical aestheticians to create a more youthful appearance” on its skin rejuvenation section that lists Botox. The red flag for patients who underwent this procedure could have been the very low price of the injections.

Plastic Surgeon Accused of Botching a Record 28 Operations

A plastic surgeon from Toronto, Canada is facing disciplinary action from the Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons after 28 of her patients reported a botched procedure. One of the procedures resulted in the death of a 32-year-old real estate agent who died only a few hours after her liposuction procedure.

Dr. Behnaz Yazdanfar is under scrutiny from the College after receiving several extreme complaints about post-surgery pain and side effects. In the case of the woman who died after liposuction, her friends and relatives had reported that fluid was “oozing from the holes in her body” after the procedure. In another case, a 22-year old patient that underwent breast augmentation experienced extreme pain after the surgery, and one of her breasts was three times larger than the other. (Source: ThePlasticSurgeryChannel.com).

Over two dozen other disturbing reports from patients of Dr. Yazdanfar have been documented. She is not a certified plastic surgeon, but does hold a medical degree. The Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons has ordered Dr. Yazdanfar to stop treating all patients until the outcome of the case has been determined.

All prospective patients considering plastic or cosmetic surgery are advised to conduct thorough research about their physician before paying any type of deposit or signing any agreement for treatment. All board-certified plastic and cosmetic surgeons in the United States must adhere to strict patient initiation protocol which includes an in-office consultation to determine if the patient is even a good candidate for the procedure, and the signing of a disclosure that states that results are not guaranteed.

While it is ultimately up to the patient and doctor to proceed with the procedure, patients can make a more informed decision by learning as much as possible about the doctor, reviewing case studies or testimonials, and looking at before and after photos to determine the doctor’s skill level and abilities to perform the procedure.

U.K. Flight Attendant Undergoes 30-Hour Plastic Surgery Makeover

An extreme makeover TV show in Great Britain recently selected a flight attendant from Lancashire to undergo a complete transformation, but the procedures that cost over $160,000 ended up leaving her with much more than she bargained for.

Nicola Stratton, 35, wanted to improve her looks with breast implants and the TV show, “A Brand New You” on Channel 5 in the U.K. offered to pay for the costs of her makeover as part of their makeover segment.  Nicola underwent 30 hours of plastic surgery in Los Angeles in order to achieve her ideal look; when it was finished, the audience was astounded at the dramatic transformation.  She went from a B-cup to a DD, and now had a very feminine, curvy figure. The surgeons also gave her facial liposuction and pinned her ears back as part o the transformation.

Unfortunately, there was more in store for this flight attendant looking for a self-esteem boost.  Her self-confidence improved considerably, and she finally felt ‘more feminine.’  However, the results did not last.  In late March 2009, only five years after her extensive makeover procedure, one of her implants burst and left her left breast sagging and loose.  The show makers are not paying for additional surgery, so Nicola has to fork over the $7,500+ for the breast correction and revision surgery.  She says that she simply cannot afford the procedure, and is worried that the other breast might burst as well.

The Los Angeles surgeon who performed the procedure did extend a 10-year warranty for the breast implants, so Nicola will only be responsible for surgery fees, the hospital stay and the flight to and from the U.S. However, this will easily cost her up to $10,000, and she is not prepared to pay the bill.

Nicola has been actively pursuing the TV show producers to see if they can help her out.  She says living with differently sized breasts is a nightmare. (Source: The Daily Mail)

Queensland Woman Sues Practice for Botched Cosmetic Surgery

j0404952Even though cosmetic and plastic surgery procedures now use the latest technologies and advanced equipment, there are still a risks involved with even the simplest procedure.

Doctors and medical spa directors are required to inform and educate patients about potential risks and side effects, but it is ultimately up to the patient to make the decision to proceed with their procedure.  Unfortunately, the outcome isn’t always what the patient would have hoped for.

A 51-year Old mother from Cairns, Australia recently underwent a facelift but the surgeon did not perform the procedure correctly.  The woman was left with unbalanced features and she cannot close her eyes properly.  She’s now filing a class action law suit against the surgeon, and has found that she’s not the only victim of botched surgery by the same clinic.  According to The Cairns Post, the woman is devastated about the disfigurement she now has to deal with after a simple facelift procedure.

She says she spent nearly $20,000 for a facelift and neck lift, and ended up looking much worse than before the procedure. She isn’t alone.  Several women who have had procedures at the same surgery center ended up with disfigured bodies.  One woman had breast implant surgery and the implants started to move into a different position during her recovery period.

The women who had the botched facelift further explains that she had originally intended to just go in for a neck lift.  The doctor had suggested she get the facelift that would get rid of bags under her eyes, but the surgery left here with an exposed lower lid and excessive scarring under her eyes, around her chin and behind her ears.

The doctor who performed the surgeries is working with an attorney to defend the work, and denies any wrongdoing.  The case is being taken to court by a law firm in Brisbane.  (Source: Cairns.com.au)

Michael Jackson Considering Cosmetic Surgery Before Comeback Tour

mjMusic legend Michael Jackson is planning his comeback tour in 2009 with a roster of 50 shows at the 02 arena in the United Kingdom alone, and he’s reportedly preparing for the event by going under the knife – again.

The 50-year-old singer’s representatives deny that he is having cosmetic surgery this year, but Ian Halperin, Jackson’s unofficial biographer, reports that the singer has been setting up consultations with some of the world’s leading cosmetic and plastic surgeons in order to freshen up his look for the tour.

Michael had his nose slightly narrowed and eyebrows reshaped at the young age of 26 during the height of the ‘Thriller’ era.  Since then, he has undergone a reported 50 more procedures that include rhinoplasty, facelift surgery, eyelifts, jaw reshaping, nostril reshaping surgery, lip reshaping and countless others.

The tour kicks off at London’s O2 Arena in July 2009, which means now is an ideal time to undergo any cosmetic or plastic surgery procedures and ensure optimal recovery before the big event.

Celebrity plastic surgery news is always a hot topic, and few stars can avoid the stigma associated with having plastic surgery. Some stars simply don’t care what the public thinks; Joan Rivers and Janice Dickinson are just two famous faces that have shared with the public exactly what they have had done, and how much they have spent.

Other celebrities prefer to keep their nip and tuck treatments a secret, and will unveil their new bodies or faces at awards shows or for an upcoming feature film.

Stars like Jackson who are always under public scrutiny can find it nearly impossible to hide the fact they’ve undergone a procedure.  Jackson in particular has been the victim of botched surgeries, plastic surgery mistakes and has had to undergo surgery simply to correct a previous procedure.
