What Women Need to Know About Gummy Bear Implants

Gummy Bear Implants

Everyone has heard of silicone implants, but the gummy bear implants are a relatively new addition to the world of breast augmentation. The medical term for gummy bear implants is “cohesive silicone gel implants”. The reason they get the nickname gummy bears after the famous candy bears is due to the fact they hold the mold of their shape like a gummy bear.

When contrasted with traditional silicone implants, the main benefit for gummy bear implants is they are more easily shaped to look like natural breasts.

Roderick Zickler, MD“Many of my patients still like the round smooth implants because the restore the upper fullness (think cleavage) and roundness that mature breast tend have lost with age or pregnancies," according to Bristol, TN plastic surgeon Roderick Zickler, MD. "But for someone who wants a stealth augmentation, with less evidence of this unnatural (but often desired) behavior the round smooth implants leave something to be desired. Enter the 'Gummy bear'; with its stiffer composition it could provide maximum fullness at the bottom of the breast with little or no evidence of its presence at the top of the breast slope.”

This basically means that if you want your breast augmentation to not be obvious, gummy bear implants provide the most natural appearance. The downside of this is that gummy implants do offer a stiffer feel than other silicone implants. However, this stiff appearance also goes with a stiff shape that does not lose its shape after the implant is installed.

Beyond aesthetic, there is a chance that gummy bear implants actually are more stable than saline and silicone implants. It is important to keep in mind that gummy bear implants are new, so they are not as well studied as other implants. However, it appears from data gathered so far they have a lower leak rate than other implants. Also, it appears that scar tissue formed around the breast, or capsular contractor, does not occur as often with the gummy bear implants.

Now that gummy bear implants are finally approved in the U.S. after years of use in Europe and Canada, it is likely we’ll hear more and more about this type of implant. It is important to keep in mind we do not know all there is to know about gummy bear implants since they are a relatively new medical technology, but from what we’ve seen so far these look like a promising improvement to cosmetic surgery.

If you are considering going with this implant, it is a good idea to discuss the procedure with a surgeon with the training and experience you need for breast reconstruction or augmentation.
