New Jersey Governor Chris Christie Underwent Lap Band Surgery

Motivated by his wife and kids, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who once called himself “the healthiest fat guy you’ve ever seen”, disclosed Tuesday he secretly underwent Gastric Banding (Lap Band Surgery) on February 16, 2013, performed by Dr. George Fielding, head of NYU Medical Center’s Weight Management Program.

While some observers may say his effort to lose weight is motivated by the thoughts of a presidential bid, Christie states, “It’s so much more important than that.”

“I’ve struggled with this issue for 20 years,” he said. “For me, this is about turning 50 and looking at my children and wanting to be there for them.”

Although Mr. Christie insists that he was in good health, he acknowledged his obesity could lead to serious health problems. Expressing that his “doctor continues to warn me that my luck is going to run out relatively soon, so believe me, it’s something I’m very conscious of”.

More and more people are becoming aware of the risks that come along with being overweight and are trying to live a healthier lifestyle through diet and exercise, but dieting and exercise doesn’t always work for everyone. Thanks to surgical interventions like bariatric surgery for weight loss, people like Governor Chris Christie no longer dream about slimming down to their ideal weight.
