January is National Blood Donor Month!

According to the American Red Cross, hospitals need 44,000 units of blood to help treat trauma victims, organ transplants, and premature babies as well as many other situations. During the winter months, due to the holidays, weather, and illnesses, it is common for blood to be in short supply.

In particular, January is a difficult month for blood centers to collect blood donations, which could put our nation’s blood inventory at a critical low. Therefore, January is designated National Blood Donor Month to encourage donors to give blood.

Singer/songwriter Jenni Alpert and America's Blood Centers have teamed up and will be giving blood donors access to a free download of her new hit song "Listen to Your Heart" as a thank you for donating blood.

If you are at least 17 years of age (some states permit younger people to donate with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds and meet other donor requirements, you may be eligible to donate blood.

Take some time and find a donation opportunity at an American Red Cross Center near you, because the need for blood is constant and the gratification is instant. Give Blood today!
