The American Society for Plastic Surgeons recently launched a safety campaign to warn consumers about the potential risks and health hazards of undergoing surgery by a poorly trained or inexperienced surgeon.
Reports of botched surgeries indicate that many patients simply make a poor choice when they are selecting a plastic or cosmetic surgeon for their liposuction, breast implants, facelift surgery and other procedures. The ASPS issued a formal warning this week to shed some light on this growing problem and clarify the decision-making and selection process for plastic and cosmetic surgery patients.
If you’ve been thinking about plastic or cosmetic surgery, take some time to do some independent research. Look at these plastic surgery before and after photos from surgeons in your area. Set up consultations with at least two or three surgeons directly through this site so you can make the most informed decision.
The ASPS says that it’s even more important today not to rely on friends and family members for a recommendation. There have been numerous reports of botched surgeries from patients who went to a surgeon recommended by a friend, and later found that the surgeon was unlicensed. Dr. Malcolm Z. Roth, the new president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and chief of plastic surgery at the Albany Medical Center in Albany, N.Y. recommends the following to all patients considering surgery:
“You should shop around for a plastic surgeon as carefully as you shop around for a car or a house. When you buy a house, you have a home inspector go and check it out beforehand. Patients need to do the same. Check the person's credentials. Ask if they have hospital privileges. Ask how many of that type of procedures they've done. Ask to see pictures. Ask around in the community”.
It’s also important to remember that all types of surgeries come with risks and side effects, and the final outcome will vary dramatically from person to person.
