"Extreme Makeover" Plastic Surgeon Talks about His Experience

The Extreme Makeover series premiered in 2002 as a hit reality TV show and had many viewers glued to the screen to watch people undergo an extreme transformation in just six weeks. Contestants on the show were put on a strict diet and exercise regimen and then had plastic surgery and a wardrobe makeover for a whole new look. Everything was documented along the way, and one NYC plastic surgeon who was responsible for performing the procedures recently interviewed with the Huffington Post to share his experience as an Extreme Makeover surgeon.

The Extreme Makeover show was one of many reality TV shows that sparked an emerging trend for plastic surgery in the past decade, and many plastic surgeons around the country started offering complete “makeover packages” and “mommy makeovers” for patients who wanted to enjoy a similar transformation. If you’ve been thinking about a mommy makeover or other plastic surgery procedures to transform your looks, get in touch with a plastic surgeon in your area to discuss your options. Dr. Robert Tornambe, an NYC plastic surgeon and one of our LocateADoc.com members, tells the Huffington Post that his biggest fear of participating in the Extreme Makeover show was that he would perform the procedure wrong on prime time television. However, he focused on the positive things that could come out of performing some successful procedures and being a part of an amazing transformation.

Dr. Tornambe was responsible for choosing the candidates who would be getting the makeover, but admits that the producers of the show wanted him to choose the people with the most dramatic stories and those that he felt would have the most amazing transformation after surgery. However, he still had to choose patients that were in good health and those that required a reasonable surgical plan. He states, “The truth is that many "makeovers" require two or three stages or operations to safely accomplish the set desires. To their credit, the producers granted me final say and I chose my 2 candidates.”

Everything did turn out fairly well with the patient makeovers and the “Reveal” parties were a huge success on and off camera. Dr. Tornambe has now published the book The Beauty Quotient Formula based on his 25 years of experience as a plastic surgeon.
