Dr. Phillip Chang Introduces Scar Reduction Technique for Breast Implant Procedure

For many men and women undergoing breast augmentation, dealing with scars can be a challenge. Plastic surgeons typically need to make several incisions around the breast bone to insert the breast implant, and some are able to use certain techniques to reduce postoperative pain and minimize the appearance of scars.

Dr. Phillip Chang of Aesthetica Cosmetic Surgery and Laser Center is one of the first plastic surgeons to use the Keller Funnel technique in breast augmentation, which helps to minimize scars and reduces the risk of implant trauma. He perfected the Keller Funnel technique for breast augmentation and breast lift procedures, and currently has offices in Loudoun and Fairfax Counties in Northern Virginia. The Keller Funnel device was recently introduced at the Annual Conference of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

Dr. Chang has perfected the technique, and recommends this procedure instead of traditional breast augmentation, because it minimizes the length of the scar, reduces the trauma of the implant in the surgical pocket, and reduces the amount of bacterial contamination. In order for the surgeon to take a patient with an A-cup breast to a C-cup, he or she must make a scar that is about seven to nine centimeters in length. With the Keller Funnel technique, the incision needs to be only about five centimeters in length. During this procedure, the implant never touches the patient’s skin or the surgeon’s gloves, which in turn reduces the risk of infection and capsular contracture.

The Keller Funnel procedure has now been performed on dozens of patients and with great success. Dr. Chang reports that patients who are comparing the surgical scars with girlfriends who have had traditional breast augmentation procedures say they have much smaller incisions and are satisfied with the results.
