The recovery process after plastic surgery can last anywhere between 48 hours to several weeks and months depending on the type of procedure performed.
Minimally-invasive procedures such as skin tightening treatments, BOTOX injections and laser liposuction promise very short recovery times, and patients are advised to eat a healthy diet, take supplements and get rest to support tissue healing. More extensive procedures such as tummy tucks, breast implants and facelift surgery also require the patient to take certain types of supplements before and after their procedure, and modify their lifestyle to accommodate for the healing process.
A handful of cosmetic surgeons are now claiming that instead of taking supplements, some patients can heal faster with an intravenous shot of vitamins immediately after surgery. According to Dr. Michael Zacharia, a Sydney physician, the key to faster recovery times is to inject the patient with a vitamin injection that contains B-complex, zinc, vitamin C and glutathione.
Dr. Zacharia says, “The vitamins have more of a beneficial effect after surgery, after the inflammatory process has started, so I don’t give them the IV injection before surgery. When they go into recovery, we put up the drip…before, it may have taken two to three weeks for the swelling to settle down, and it’s now taking about a week.” (Source: News.com.au)
The National Institute of Complementary Medicine has made a formal statement about this approach, indicating that a significant amount of research needs to be completed before this strategy can be considered effective. Overall, vitamins can be beneficial before and after surgery, and the healthier the person is, the easier it will be for them to heal and recover from their procedure.
Most physicians recommend oral vitamins such as fish oils, magnesium, zinc, evening primrose, oil, B-vitamins and vitamin C to reduce inflammation and speed up healing.
