Washington State Cosmetic Surgeon Botches Teen’s Breast Surgery

A cosmetic surgeon from Moses Lake, Washington has been accused of unprofessional conduct for a recent breast reduction and liposuction procedure performed on a 15-year old girl.

Dr. Thomas Laney reportedly lacked the education and training needed to perform both procedures and ended up botching the breast reduction procedure. The Medical Quality Assurance Commission reports that the patient’s breasts “now have an aesthetically odd and unnatural appearance” and the doctor should not have agreed to perform liposuction on the 15-year old girl.

The girl sued the doctor three years after the surgery was performed, and a complaint was submitted to the state board in late 2008. However, the Medical Quality Assurance Commission only just recently proceeded with filing charges.

According to Steven Fitzer, the doctor’s attorney, the patient had received permission from her parents to go ahead with the surgery. “She had sought out care from a number of plastic surgeons…she went through an elaborate evaluation and consent process. The parents were fully advised of the situation and signed multiple consent forms acknowledging the risks, benefit and alternatives to the procedure.” (Source: FoxNews.com)

The doctor holds a medical degree from the University of Nebraska and a dentistry degree from Creighton University of Nebraska. He is also certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and is a member of the American Board of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

The American Board of Plastic Surgery continues to advise patients to do as much research as possible about the procedure and the surgeon before pursuing treatment. The organization points out that even when a doctor is board-certified, they may not have the experience and knowledge needed to perform certain types of surgery.

According to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Dr. Laney had been sued 10 times by patients and their families in 2005.
