Botox and other injectables are some of the most in-demand procedures on the market, and some people are willing to shell out a few hundred dollars for the drugs that are cropping up on eBay and other auction sites.
A recent investigation revealed that ‘DIY Botox Kits’ were available, a complete starter set that included Botox powder, needles, and a face map – and all of it was available without a prescription.
In the legal market, only doctors and licensed medical professionals are permitted to purchase Botox, and they must pay full price for the drugs. In the United States, doctors are not permitted to provide ‘discount Botox’ services, or dilute or modify the drug in any way. Doing so can result in fines and penalties.
The recent investigation revealed how easy it has become for the average consumer to buy a Botox kit online, and that they can do it discreetly – and at a fraction of the cost of a regular Botox injection. The average Botox injection costs $400; this DIY kit was available on eBay in the U.S. market for just $95. The kit included everything a person would need to self-administer the drug; the needles, saline mix and a facial map were included as a starter set for anyone who wanted to get their Botox fix – or give it to someone else.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration would be the party involved in taking action against the companies and individuals selling Botox and related products illegally, but consumers still need to be vigilant about their purchases, and steer clear of lower-priced cosmetic treatments. Botox should only be administered by a licensed professional in a clinic setting; the drug is essentially a poison that can affect other parts of the body if it is administered improperly.
