More Chinese College Graduates Seeking Cosmetic Surgery

j0439517Call it a sign of the times or a predictor of the future job market and economic outlook; overseas college graduates are doing their best to find employment in their home countries and abroad by undergoing a physical makeover.

As the job market continues to become more competitive, college graduates in China are heading to the doctor’s office for eyelid surgery, nose augmentation and other facial enhancements that, in their minds, give them a confidence boost. China View, an online news publication, recently reported on an emerging trend in China that has been triggered by the economic downturn.

Parents of students and many graduates who are jumping into the job market are looking for ways to convince interviewers that they are the best candidates for the position. Many believe cosmetic surgery of the face that makes their face look thinner and their eyes larger will give them a boost in confidence – and help them land that coveted position.

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a popular procedure among Asian patients that want to achieve a more ‘Westernized’ look. The procedure involves lifting up the upper eyelid and creating extra creases in the lid to create a bright-eyed look. The procedure has been termed double-eyelid surgery because the fold is absent; the lid is created by adding fat or other injectables directly into the eyelid and results are immediate. College students in China may be good candidates for this procedure that promises little downtime and significant results.

The phenomena isn’t restricted to Chinese territory; many Americans have been working hard to keep their jobs during a time of drastic job cuts by getting Botox and other cosmetic enhancements to freshen up their looks.Competition from younger employees and a desire to succeed in the corporate world are fueling much of the demand for injectables and other quick-fixes in the United States.
