Researchers Discover Reason for Graying Hair

42-16033893Anti aging specialists offer a number of hair transplant options and treatments to ensure a healthy head of hair, but have still been stumped by the age-old question of why hair turns gray.Researchers in Europe have recently released data on why the color in hair breaks down over the years, and have determined that hydroxen peroxide is the culprit.

European scientists from the Universities of Bradford, Luebeck and Mainz have published new findings about key reasons behind graying hair, pointing to the hair follicles and their ability to produce hair’s natural pigment.

Results were published in The FASEB Journal and indicate that gray hair is the result of hydrogen peroxide buildup that tears down the hair follicles.Hydrogen peroxide blocks the production of melanin, the compound that gives hair, eyes and skin its natural color, and when the body can no longer produce enough, the hair begins to turn gray.

Researchers conducted this study by examining native hair and cells that were isolated from human hair follicles. This allowed them to see that melanin simply could not be produced without the cells in the scalp, and that low levels of repair enzymes made the hair follicles especially susceptible to long-term damage.Hydroxen peroxide buildup disrupts the production of tyrosinase, the essential enzyme needed to produce more melanin.

The FASEB Journal is published by the Federation of the American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) and features the latest advances and innovations for human health.More information about this particular study can be found here.

Currently, there is no treatment for graying hair and hair restoration specialists offer a number of treatments and services that help to increase production of natural hair and revive the scalp.Individuals who are experiencing hair loss and graying hair can resort to hair transplants and professional hair coloring services to achieve a more youthful appearance.
