European scientists from the Universities of Bradford, Luebeck and Mainz have published new findings about key reasons behind graying hair, pointing to the hair follicles and their ability to produce hair’s natural pigment.
Results were published in The FASEB Journal and indicate that gray hair is the result of hydrogen peroxide buildup that tears down the hair follicles.Hydrogen peroxide blocks the production of melanin, the compound that gives hair, eyes and skin its natural color, and when the body can no longer produce enough, the hair begins to turn gray.
Researchers conducted this study by examining native hair and cells that were isolated from human hair follicles.This allowed them to see that melanin simply could not be produced without the cells in the scalp, and that low levels of repair enzymes made the hair follicles especially susceptible to long-term damage.Hydroxen peroxide buildup disrupts the production of tyrosinase, the essential enzyme needed to produce more melanin.
